This chapter - taken from a larger study considering the role of sport in film - examines the representation of gender in the mainstream sports film genre. While identifying the main focus of the genre on masculinity and the male body, the chapter is principally concerned with tracing the role of women in the mainstream sports film. Historically women have featured within the genre primarily in the roles of inspirational lovers or femme fatales. In the aftermath of World War II, film responded slowly to the changes more generally in Western society, with women featuring increasingly in more significant parts even on occasion crossing the ropes of the boxing ring. However, a recurring feature of such films is the repeated attempts to reaffirm patriarchy through the undermining of strong women. While female owners of sporting franchises are viewed with suspicion, female athletes are subordinated to their male coaches while been repeatedly subject to sexualisation. Films considered include National Velvet (1944), Pat and Mike (1952), The Main Event (1979), Raging Bull (1980), A League of Their Own (1992), Bring It On (2000) and Million Dollar Baby (2004).

For a long time, football has been called the "beautiful" game. The irony, however, is that while anything termed "beautiful" is generally associated with femininity, few women take up an active interest or appreciation in the game of football. Moreover, as an extension of that, very few female journalists report on it. So should we instead call it the "handsome" game in order to reflect football's dominant masculine character, both in terms of participation and reportage? The following article contextualises gender perspectives on reporting sports against the backdrop of the impending 2010 FIFA World Cup, and ultimately disregards any suggestions that football, and sports reporting, should be the preserves of an impenetrable "boy's club." Finally, suggestions are given as to how female journalists can take up an active role in writing the story of 2010-Africa's greatest moment on the international arena.

The purpose of this paper was to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the coverage of women at the Olympic Games. A total of 144 records were collected from the Web of Science database which were screened to n = 58 for in-depth examination. A content analysis was performed with the data gathered based on the following thematic categories: evolution of scientific publications by years; types of studies carried out; countries and regions with the longest track record in the topic; citations, authors and main findings, and future research strands. The results showed that the studies were mainly performed in the United States, especially in recent years, and with a strong incidence in 2015, in areas such as the social sciences and communication and with a greater focus on television, albeit with a growing interest in the new digital media. In general, they continue to report a lack of fairness in the amount of coverage, coupled with gender differentiation in the representation of women's sport. Further studies are suggested to reveal whether such imbalances persist or progress is being made towards greater fairness.
