Digital Edition

This paper will explore two examples from the design, structure and implementation of the ‘E-learning and Digital Cultures’ Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the University of Edinburgh in partnership with Coursera.  This five week long course (known as the EDCMOOC) was delivered twice in 2013, and is considered an atypical MOOC in its utilisation of both the Coursera platform and a range of social media and open access materials.  The combination of distributed and aggregated structure will be highlighted, examining the arrangement of course material on the Coursera platform and student responses in social media.  This paper will suggest that a dominant instrumentalist view of technology limits considerations of these systems to merely enabling or inhibiting educational aims.  The subsequent discussion will suggest that sociomaterial theory offers a valuable framework for considering how educational spaces are produced through relational practices between humans and non-humans.  An analysis of You Tube and a bespoke blog aggregator will show how the algorithmic properties of these systems perform functions that cannot be reduced to the intentionality of either the teachers using these systems, or the authors who create the software, thus constituting a complex sociomaterial educational enactment.

The "Chronicon" by Romualdus from Salerno is a universal chronical of the XII century in Latin that constitutes an important source for the early stages of the Norman conquest of Southern Italy. I am working on a new digital critical edition of this texts based on the main manuscripts (A, B, C, Aa/D in Schwarz's siglum). It will be based on full transcriptions of the texts of those witnesses, encoded in TEI/XML, and on their semi-automatic collation with CollateX and ad hoc Python software. This digital methodology will provide richer evidence of the textual variance in the manuscripts, especially since the apparatus criticus of Garufi's 1914 edition seems to omit a number of readings. The numerous textual additions differentiating the "long" and the "short" version of the work and the possible transpositions of those passages pose a specific technological challenge because they make computational collation particularly complex. Another challenging task is the distinction between orthografic and substantial variants, since they can serve different research interests of different readers

This project aims to inform the construction of Antiquity during the early modern age by taking as a privileged example Natale Conti’s Mythologiae Libri Decem. We want to understand how Renaissance humanists created the conditions for an understanding of Antiquity in the different fields of thought and knowledge such as history, geography, natural sciences, philosophy, and technical knowledge as well. The project will highlight the material, social and intellectual conditions governing the constitution of knowledge and its sharing in the European area before the Enlightenment. We will also analyze the ways in which civil society appropriates this knowledge and enhance the dynamics of knowledge transformation by different European publics (in particular English, Italian, French, and German) during the 16th and 17th centuries. This will be achieved by taking advantage of the contributions of cultural anthropology and the study of erudite practices: the project aims to study the invention of the past, going beyond transmission studies, beyond the question of intertextuality and the paradigm of heritage, which implies some form of passive reception.

В этой статье мы расскажем о работе по созданию цифрового издания текстов Льва Толстого. Наша цель-появление многоуровневой разметки в большом и жанрово разнообразном собрании произведений русского писателя, но попутно мы хотели бы и внести свой вклад в стандартизацию электронного представления текстов и электронной текстологии в России. Мы считаем важным создавать образцы та­ких подходов для текстов не на английском языке, для которого уже есть довольно много авторитетных ориентиров. Что касается такого русскоязычного опыта, то на сегодняшний день он довольно беден и часто игнорирует стандарты цифровой публикации, такие, как Linked Open Data и Text Encoding Initiative. Мы надеемся, что наша работа позволит популяризировать эти стандарты, продемонстрировав их потенциал для выстраивания инфраструктуры сохранения и исследования текстов. Наш основной источник-это 90­томное (т. н. «Юбилейное») Полное собрание сочинений Льва Толстого, выходившее в 1928­1958 годах. Это не просто печатное представление текста, за каждым томом стоит огромная текстологическая и иссле­ довательская работа, которую нам также хотелось бы оцифровать и сохранить. Наша разметка должна сделать редакционные примечания более приспособленными для количественных исследований. Включенный в 90­томник критический аппарат, комментарии, биографические справки, указатели представляют собой фактиче­ ски энциклопедическую базу знаний русской культуры с 1850­х до 1900­х годов. На сегодняшний день весьма небольшая часть этой базы представлена в открытых источниках вроде DBpedia [https://dbpedia.org].

Modernist literary texts, especially those in the avant-garde tradition, present fundamental challenges to classical concepts of text status and structure. These texts, experimental in their published forms, also demonstrate complex relationships with their manuscript documents. Renewed interest in the flexible text models of the German philological tradition, and the promise of digital tools and techniques, presents scholarly editors with potentially ground-breaking opportunities to represent Modernist texts in ways that make explicit the nature and extent of their formal experimentation. This essay takes Samuel Beckett’s novel Watt, and its complex manuscript archive, as an example: a number of digital tools and techniques, taken with renewed concepts of literary structure, may provide the editorial means by which to do justice to the formal and aesthetic innovations in this singular text process.

parte delle imprese con l’obiettivo di acquisire clienti, è uno strumento
indispensabile per generare business, una strategia che fornisce ai
consumatori, attraverso una varietà di formati multimediali, ciò che
desiderano veramente in modo funzionale agli obiettivi e ai valori di un brand. Nel 1996 Bill Gates aveva previsto l’impatto dei contenuti sulle attività di business. Il suo slogan “Content is King” non è mai stato tanto attuale.

Préconisations

Dans une économie de l’attention, de l’accès, l’objectif des professionnels de la culture et de la connaissance consiste à promouvoir la rareté au sein de l’abondance. Pour cela, ce rapport propose plusieurs préconisations.

- L’interopérabilité permet, par le biais de normes et de standards comme ceux proposés par l’IDPF, de lire les fichiers sur tout type de supports, de les commercialiser aisément et de les
conserver dans un archivage pérenne.

Dans ce but, en amont, la structuration des documents doit s’effectuer selon un schéma documenté, issu de formats ouverts et non propriétaires (DTBook, TEI ou DocBook). Les métadonnées seront issues de DublinCore et d’Onix. L’archivage se fera selon les normes OAI-PMH. Le dépôt légal prévoit désormais un ISBN numérique.

Cela représente un coût. Des aides régionales seront sans doute nécessaires pour envisager ces développements, des formations les permettant, et des informations. La mise en oeuvre d’une
place des métiers pourra contribuer à trouver compétences et lieux de formation, voire des informations par un outil de veille du type Netvibes ou Delicious, public et gratuit.

- La mutualisation en réseaux permet de démultiplier le référencement et d’envisager sereinement des développements en faisant des économies d’échelle.

Mutualisation de quelques librairies pour : construire un site web, le développer puis le modérer, élaborer un réseau de lecteurs-blogueurs, organiser ses commandes de livres imprimés à la demande, inviter des auteurs et les rémunérer pour des lectures publiques, tester différents systèmes de bornes d’achat et de sites marchands...

Mutualisation des librairies et des bibliothèques pour des lectures publiques et rémunérées, pour élargir son champ de compétences afin de mixer les systèmes de catalogages. Ensemble, les deux lieux de la cité, du quartier, consacrés au livre tisseront un maillage social essentiel dans la vie
locale, et le porteront à un niveau global par l’intermédiaire d’une base interopérable de référencement Non exclusivité des diffuseurs et distributeurs en vue de construire un marché et
d’appréhender les outils.

Reconsidérer le droit d’auteur en fonction des licences de contributions créatives, cela afin de conserver le droit moral et la juste rétribution des oeuvres de l’esprit.

Éditer les oeuvres et les ouvrages avec une équipe d’auteurs, d’artistes et d’ingénieurs et de développeurs. L’édition s’apparente désormais à la production multimédia d’images fixes et animées, textuelle et hypertextuelle, graphique et sonore.
L’Atelier collectif que projette le Motif sera un vivier d’auteurs et d’artistes à la pointe des nouvelles technologies et de ce qu’elles permettent en termes d’innovations, d’inventivité et de
création.

Il s’élaborera en étroite collaboration avec la Place des métiers qui mettra en relation prestataires de services et producteurs.
L’Atelier collectif et la Place des métiers seront deux plates-formes en ligne et in situ qui mettront en relation les prestataires de services, tous ces free-lances de l’édition et des arts graphiques, les producteurs que sont les éditeurs, mais peut-être parfois aussi les bibliothécaires et les libraires, les artistes comme les auteurs.

Son objectif vise à ce que la chaine du livre prenne conscience de son maillage actuel en réseau, en toile d’araignée, afin que les professionnels du livre se trouvent au coeur de la diffusion vers le lecteur, en travaillant avec les auteurs.

La Place des Métiers et l’Atelier collectif sont des plate-formes de réseau social qui visent à développer les compétences et les formations pour dynamiser l’emploi dans le secteur du livre et du
texte, pour que l’auteur invente avec d’autres, et qu’il perçoive une plus juste rémunération de ses oeuvres.

A comprehensive review of the most significant developments in the study of the reconstruction of the Greek text of Revelation and its textual history from the Textus Receptus of the 16h century to the Text und Textwert project of the 21st. (This is a pre-published version).

The aim of presented paper is to outline the concept of the issuing of the seventh volume of the source edition "Codex diplomaticus et epistolaris regni Bohemiae" and its digital version. As a reaction to the changes in the diplomatic material at the end of the 13th century (in connection with the changes of stylization e.g. because of the permeation of the principles of Canon and Roman law into the charters or an influence of professional notaries educated in the domestic notary school in Vyšehrad, or with regard to the emergence of the official books, especially formularies), the editors decided to change a concept of issuing of CDB. In the first phase there will be processed and finished the second part of "Katalog listin a listů k VII. dílu Českého diplomatáře" and its on-line publishing in a form of database on website. The second phase will be connected with the preparation of the critical edition in a traditional printed as well as a digital form.

This paper is an attempt to apply cultural semiotics to the realm of digital textuality. The first part defines what digital humanities are, and the interconnections between the translation activity and the work of the digital text encoder. The second part provides examples of how markup languages, i.e. XML-TEI, by adding semiotic layers to a document,  can both represent and manipulate the original source. In conclusion, digital encoding can be seen as a complex semiotic act that can have profound effects on the identity of our cultural artifacts.

This call for applications pursues a novel and yet age-old approach to one of the fundamental challenges of Islamicate History, and Islamicate intellectual history in particular: With an estimated 85% of the texts of the Later Middle and early Modern periods remaining unpublished, basic research ('Grundlagenforschung') is required to make accessible key texts through critical editions based on a careful selection and comparison of the extant manuscript witnesses. With the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Kolleg of the Islamicate Intellectual History of the Later Middle and Early Modern Periods at the University of Bonn, scholars are invited to submit proposals for the critical edition and/or translation into English of key texts of the period 1200-1700. At a time when critical editions are not the stuff that attracts financial support, this is a unique opportunity to (re-)engage with this kind of philological work. Applications for the completion of editions on which work was already begun are also welcome. With this call we invite applications for two different strands of residential fellowships, one (i) for an already identified work that we believe deserves publication, and one (ii) for bottomup proposals for the preparation and publication of a critical edition of a text freely chosen and proposed by applicants. The texts should pertain to the period 1200-1700 and can be written in Arabic, Persian, or Ottoman or Chagatay Turkish. Up to five fellowships will be awarded for the academic year 2022-2023, starting in October 2022. (i) Call for applications to prepare a critical edition of one of the unpublished parts of Ṣadr al-Sharīʿa's (d. 747/1347) Taʿdīl al-ʿulūm. Applications are particularly encouraged by such scholars who have previously worked on Ṣadr al-Sharīʿa and/or have already started preparing a (partial) edition, though entirely new projects related to Ṣadr al-Sharīʿa's oeuvre are equally welcome. (ii) Call for applications to prepare a critical edition and/or English translation of a relevant text freely chosen and suggested by applicants.

"(...) There are at least two meanings in which post-digital can be understood.
First, considering the prefix "post" in its temporal meaning, "after", post-digital would be referring to everything that came after the expanding and refined installation of computational algorithms in all human activities. It is a neutral, strictly chronological sense. But there is also a critical sense: it is necessary to go through its gains and losses. This is what is meant by  "post-digital". Gone are the days of euphoria, by the way, accompanied by dysphoria that in its extremes nostalgically announced the apocalypse. Fortunately, a time of exceeding thoughts concerning the digital has gone. Now is time to face its ambivalences, paradoxes and contradictions. This is precisely what has been called "post-digital".
The book contains a myriad of perspectives, fine prismatic subdivisions of the technological art in its digital features with specific details of the production that makes use of new generation devices and resources, such as kinect cameras,multi interactive media, cyber interventions, mixed and augmented reality, three-dimensional modeling, programmable environments, complex algorithms, neural helmets, etc. On the other hand, the book is punctuated with theoretical and critical essays in which the new conditions of the museum, artists’ books, hybrid arts, authorship, digital art festival, digital cinematography and last but not least, geophysical materiality and geochemistry of the media are rethought and faced in the light of the most current challenges."

Le texte médiéval est soumis, dans sa construction et sa diffusion, à un travail éditorial qui en modifie nécessairement la nature et la réception.

Face à la mouvance du texte au Moyen Âge et devant l’hétérogénéité des pratiques éditoriales médiévales, quels ont été les partis-pris scientifiques de l’édition de ces trente dernières années ? Depuis le XIXe siècle, la philologie a connu de nombreuses évolutions : comment le travail éditorial a-t-il intégré, adapté ou rejeté les acquis de ses prédécesseurs ? Par ailleurs, Internet est depuis ces quinze dernières années l’un des principaux vecteurs de transformation de l’édition de textes médiévaux et les enjeux de cette révolution éditoriale n’ont pas encore fait l’objet d’un bilan. La dématérialisation du livre suppose nécessairement une construction et une transmission différente du texte. On peut notamment se demander dans quelle mesure cet outil parvient ou non à pallier les limites techniques du livre imprimé et à renouveler l’approche de l’objet manuscrit dans ce qu’il a de plus singulier. Cependant, l’édition sur Internet, la numérisation du patrimoine manuscrit et tous les outils électroniques de ressources textuelles qui se développent aujourd’hui n’imposent-ils pas un nouveau mirage ? Le sentiment d’un accès apparemment illimité et sans contrainte à l’objet manuscrit ne produit-il pas de nouveaux écarts interprétatifs entre le texte édité et le manuscrit ?

Les contributions qui forment la partie « Études & travaux » de ce premier numéro en ligne de Perspectives Médiévales apportent des éléments de réponse et des éclairages à ces questionnement qui traversent l’histoire et les pratiques contemporaines de l’édition des textes médiévaux.

La partie « État de la recherche » de la revue, conformément à sa mission de réflexion sur la recherche contemporaine, présente des comptes rendus de lectures critiques d'ouvrages de médiévistique récemment parus ainsi que les positions des thèses dernièrement soutenues.

The Freiburg DFG project 'Making Mysticism. Mystical Books in the Library of the Erfurt Charterhouse‘ (https://making-mysticism.org/) explores the question of how the (literary) historiographical category 'mysticism' relates to the historical order category theologia mystica. The library catalog of the Charterhouse St. Salvatorberg (Erfurt, diocesan archive, Hs. Hist. 6), which was created around 1475 and was mainly expanded into the 1520s, offers the opportunity to use historically documented library holdings and the order according to which they are recorded are to examine the beginning of the category formation 'mysticism'. The catalog is not a simple inventory. Rather, the books are programmatically assigned to individual signature groups, with the program of spiritual self-perfection being developed in the introductions to the signature groups. The groups D, DF, E, F and I, which contain books on theologia mystica and revelationes, are particularly relevant for the investigation of the (literary) historiographical category 'mysticism'. Because they are the focus of the project, they were selected for the present digital, genetic new edition. The beta version with the edition of the signature groups D and I.

Das Freiburger DFG-Projekt ‚Making Mysticism. Mystische Bücher in der Kartause Erfurt‘ (https://making-mysticism.org/) geht der Frage nach, wie sich die (literatur-)historiographische Kategorie ‚Mystik‘ zur historischen Ordnungskategorie theologia mystica verhält. Der Bibliothekskatalog der Erfurter Kartause St. Salvatorberg (Erfurt, Bistumsarchiv, Hs. Hist. 6), der um 1475 entstand und hauptsächlich bis in die 1520er Jahre erweitert wurde, bietet die Gelegenheit, anhand historisch bezeugter Bibliotheksbestände und der Ordnung, nach der sie verzeichnet sind, den Anfang der Kategorienbildung ‚Mystik‘ zu untersuchen. Der Katalog stellt nämlich kein einfaches Bestandsverzeichnis dar. Vielmehr sind die Bücher programmatisch einzelnen Signaturengruppen zugeordnet, wobei das Programm einer spirituellen Selbstvervollkommnung in den Einleitungen zu den Signaturengruppen entwickelt wird. Die für die Untersuchung der (literatur-)historiographischen Kategorie ‚Mystik‘ besonders relevanten Signaturengruppen sind die Gruppen D, DF, E, F und I, die Bücher zur theologia mystica und zu revelationes enthalten. Weil sie im Fokus des Projektes stehen, wurden sie für die hier vorliegende digitale, genetische Neuedition ausgewählt. Einen ersten Einblick in die Möglichkeiten, die die zukünftige Neuedition bietet, gewährt Ihnen die jetzt schon vorliegende Beta-Version mit der Edition der Signaturengruppen D und I.

Part of the geste du roi, the Chanson d'Otinel had not been the subject of an edition since the pioneer work of  F. Guessard and H. Michelant in 1858. Starting with the tangible objects that manuscripts are, and proceeding to the study of the tradition and work itself, this study aims to provide a new examination of all the available data, in order to enable a restoration of a song that has know an important diffusion in Medieval Europe, but whose scattered remains only are available to us.

This study is given a firmly methodological orientation, and searches to apply to the edition the epistemological progresses brought by recent contributions in the field of textual criticism and ecdotics, as well as by what is now called “Digital Humanities”. It aims at overcoming the debate between “New” and Traditional Philology, based on the common errors method or of Bedierist inspiration, to place itself in the perspective of a “Fourth Way” and of an edition “oriented towards the tradition”.

Digital scholarly editing and Digital Philology techniques are used in order to provide a full edition of the manuscript corpus, with “layered” transcriptions that give access to different representations and to the graphic system of all witnesses. The edition aims also at the study and description of the links between these witnesses, by suggesting a method of representation of textual variance and by rooting genealogical analysis in a global consideration of the tradition, including medieval translations (in Welsh, Norse, English) and derived versions.

The modelling and description of manuscripts and their texts – formalised by an xml/tei model conceived for this edition but seeking to be of more general interest – is clearly oriented towards data mining, and computational as well as traditional analysis (Palaeography, Scriptometry, Stemmatology). Methods from the fields of mathematical modelling, statistics, algorithmic, and artificial intelligence are put to use, as well as processes seeking to allow interoperability, scalability, and systematisation of editorial work (optical character recognition, linguistic tagging, collation), in a workflow centred on analysis. Main used languages are xml (tei, xslt), R and Python.

Digital Scholarly Editions and historians: editing the records of the Imperial Diet of 1576 (ONLINE).

Abstract
A team of researchers at the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of
Sciences and Humanities and the University of Graz are developing a digital
scholarly edition of the records documenting the Imperial Diet (Reichstag) of
Regensburg in 1576. At the Imperial Diet, between June and October 1576,
Emperor Maximilian II and more than 200 representatives of the imperial estates
(Reichsstände) of the Holy Roman Empire discussed and decided about the
political fate of Central Europe. The numerous meetings and deliberations at the
Imperial Diet are of central interest to the ongoing project and new digital
edition.

From a digital scholarly editing point of view, the project explores a particular
way of editing historical documents (seen as a text characterised by its content)
and representing the formal information, for instance about the above-mentioned
deliberations, as structured data in RDF. This kind of editing is a further
development of editing practices used by historians–in a recent article Georg
Vogeler suggested the name “assertive edition”.

Our presentation will explore this editing approach in the context of the Imperial Diet's records edition. We will discuss how we have edited the historical records and
semantically enriched them with TEI markup, how we extract “facts” in the form of
RDF triples, and how we combine the edited texts with a database. This approach
allows us to access the Imperial Diet of 1576 as a bundle of communication
events and thereby opens it up for historiographical research interested in
content, communication and procedures.
