El lenguaje comparado con la lógica y la matemática La descripción específica de las propiedades del lenguaje posibilita ver las principales semejanzas y diferencias entre el lenguaje natural y los sistemas lógicos o matemáticos. Está claro que la diferencia no reside en imposibilidad alguna de una descripción precisa del lenguaje natural: el conjunto sin sinónimos (synonymless set) bajo las operaciones de base incrementales 1 puede describirse de manera precisa, aunque el detalle necesario para una descripción completa resultaría aún prohibitivo. Ni tampoco reside la principal diferencia en la existencia de ambigüedades lingüísticas. Es verdad que, hasta donde sabemos, toda lengua natural tiene frases ambiguas. Pero se sigue de 7.1.3 que puede construirse un sistema que exprese la información transportada en el lenguaje 2 sin ambigüedad. Las dificultades en comparar los dos tipos de sistema se aminoran desde el momento en que puede probarse que las preguntas, los imperativos, y otras frases así que están más allá del alcance de la lógica son transformados 3 de aserciones (¡Ven! ← Te pido que vengas), de modo que el conjunto sin paráfrasis (paraphraseless set) de frases contiene sólo aseveraciones. Tanto el lenguaje natural como los sistemas matemáticos tienen variables que pueden adoptar valores en cierto dominio, y secuencias bien formadas de tales variables (y constantes) como formas de aserción elementales. The present paper constitutes a brief advance of much longer and more detailed ongoing work on the concept of "trace" in contemporary linguistic theory, particularly in syntax. It is commonly believed that the idea was coined by Noam Chomsky. However, we already detect its use, with a very accurate value, in the early work of Zellig Harris on mathematical linguistics or, to be more precise, on mathematical structures of language. In its origins, rather than being an index responsible for marking the location occupied by a unit previous to its syntactic movement (which always takes the form of fronting), the trace was the result of a matrix product between n-adic functions. Thus, in Harris the trace is primarily a concept anchored in matrix calculus, or, put it differently, an algebraic notion. Chomsky's notion, on its turn, is closely related with the LISP programming language. This text seeks to provide a preliminary analysis of the conceptual complexity implied in the concept of trace, which linguists should become aware of, for otherwise they will be doomed to be entangled in misunderstandings unfruitful to our discipline for decades to come. Zellig Harris’s name is famous in linguistics primarily for his early work on transformational grammar and his influence on his most famous student, Noam Chomsky. However, much of his linguistic work has since fallen into comparative obscurity. Moreover, his political research and activism – about which he was especially guarded throughout his lifetime – has received scant attention.

In this meticulously-researched biography, Zellig Harris: From American Linguistics to Socialist Zionism (MIT Press, 2011), Robert Barsky casts a great deal more light upon Harris’s story. Exploring his involvement in the Avukah student group in the 1930s and 40s, Barsky shows how Harris not only strove to advance the cause of socialist Zionism, but also shaped the destinies of several influential thinkers. He also traces the course of the revolutionary programme of linguistic enquiry that Harris laid out, inspired by the example of theoretical physics, and how this ongoing work came to be regarded as eccentric by practitioners of the dominant contemporary research trends.

In this interview, we discuss the utopian ideals of socialist Zionism, and the influence of Harris upon Chomsky’s political thought. We look at the contradictory facets of Zellig Harris as an individual. And we consider whether rationality is an unreasonable assumption, when it comes to inter-personal dynamics.
