Many anxiety disorders are not treated to remission (symptom-free state); however, this should be the minimum goal of therapy. Antidepressant therapies have shown significant beneficial effects in the management of anxiety disorders, with some variability in results in specific disorders. In social anxiety disorder, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and venlafaxine extended release (XR) have demonstrated efficacy, with response rates varying between 40% and 68%. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and cognitive-behavioural therapies are also effective. In patients with generalized anxiety disorder, benzodiazepines, paroxetine, and venlafaxine XR have demonstrated remission rates that are 15% to 25% higher than placebo. In patients with posttraumatic stress disorder, about 60% to 70% of patients experienced a response with antidepressant therapy, compared with about 40% on placebo, while remission rates in one study were 30% with venlafaxine, 24% with sertraline, and 20% with placebo....

Weanling female rats were assigned to two weight-matched groups of 24; one group was fed a basal diet containing about 1.9 microg Si/kg; the other group was fed the basal diet supplemented with 35 microg Si/kg as arginine silicate inositol complex. After being fed their respective diets for 8 weeks, 12 rats in each group were injected subcutaneously with 1 mg lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/kg body weight; the other 12 rats in each group were injected with deionized water. We have investigated the influences of gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and interleukin-12 (IL-12) on the efficacy of posaconazole (POS) treatment of acute experimental infections with Trypanosoma cruzi ; the standard drug, benznidazole (BZ), was used as a positive control. Wild-type (WT) mice infected with T. cruzi and treated with POS or BZ had no parasitemia, 100% survival, and cure rates of 86 to 89%. IFN-γ-knockout (KO) mice infected with T. cruzi and treated with BZ controlled the infection during treatment but relapsed after the drug pressure ceased and had 0% survival, while those receiving POS better controlled the infection after the end of treatment and had 70% survival ( P < 0.0001 compared to the results for both untreated and BZ-treated animals). Methods and Results— We screened a set of 16 inflammation-related genes for association with CRP in a large population-based study of healthy young adults (n=1627). Results were validated in 2 independent studies (n=1208 and n=4310), including a pooled analysis of all 3 studies. The aim of the present study was to study the well-being of the spouses of stroke patients during the acute state of stroke and to identify factors that may influence their well-being. Methods —Eighty-three consecutively enrolled spouses of first-ever stroke patients <75 years old participated. Their psychological well-being, measured by the Psychological General Well-Being Index 10 days after the stroke, was compared with norm values. Turpentine-induced acute-phase (AP) response in rats is followed by transcriptional activation of the haptoglobin (Hp) gene in liver. Analysing the promoter sequence of the rat Hp gene we postulated an involvement of Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) in the regulation of this process. Results obtained by using a combination of Western immunoblot and DNA-binding assays revealed AP-induced binding of constitutive 86kD-and inducible 91kD-STAT3 isoforms to the rat Hp gene inducible promoter element. On the basis of these data we assumed that AP-related interactions of these two STAT3 isoforms correlates with an activated transcriptional status of the rat Hp gene.

To determine whether differences in the evolutionary potential of bottlenecked inoculum may explain the low rate of HCV persistence after sexual exposure, we have investigated changes in the entire HCV nonstructural 3 (NS3) gene over time in a chronic carrier and compared his viral quasispecies with that of the acute-phase isolate of his sexual partner, who developed acute resolving hepatitis C. A unique protocol to select and use non-competitive monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) for two high-sensitivity sandwich ELISAs has been developed to detect both infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) and viral haemorrhagic septicaemia virus (VHSV) in turbot kidney extracts to assess the possibility of using them in field diagnosis. For maximum sensitivity, turbot kidney extracts can be two-fold diluted with high-ionic strength buffers and assayed for the presence of the major viral proteins (VMS rhabdovirus nucleoprotein N/Nx and/or IPN birnavirus protein VP3).
