About this audiobook
Carey Duncan has worked for home remodeling and design gurus Melissa and Rusty Tripp for nearly a decade. A country girl at heart, Carey started in their first store at sixteen, and—more than anyone would suspect—has helped them build an empire. With a new show and a book about to launch, the Tripps are on the verge of superstardom. There’s only one problem: America’s favorite couple can’t stand each other.
James McCann, MIT graduate and engineering genius, was originally hired as a structural engineer, but the job isn’t all he thought it’d be. The last straw? Both he and Carey must go on book tour with the Tripps and keep the wheels from falling off the proverbial bus.
Unfortunately, neither of them is in any position to quit. Carey needs health insurance, and James has been promised the role of a lifetime if he can just keep the couple on track for a few more weeks. While road-tripping with the Tripps up the West Coast, Carey and James vow to work together to keep their bosses’ secrets hidden, and their own jobs secure. But if they stop playing along—and start playing for keeps—they may have the chance to build something beautiful together…
From the “hilariously zany and heartfelt” (Booklist) Christina Lauren comes a romantic comedy that proves if it’s broke, you might as well fix it.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a fun and enjoyable read with creative and relevant storylines. The banter between the characters is good, although some readers would have liked to see more relationship development. The book has a slow start but picks up with hilarious one-liners and keeps readers engaged with its drama and emotional twists. Overall, it is a sweet and enjoyable book, perfect for those who love workplace romance tropes and mindless romantic fun.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not the best I've read but after a couple that actually offended me this one was nice. Though I think her boss might be a gaslighter, definitely manipulative. Please watch out if you're triggered by this.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5These characters weren’t my favorite of CL’s. It took me a while to really get into the story. It’s not like her other books that capture your attention from page one. Despite the slow start, there were some hilarious one liners that had me smiling and laughing out loud.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was a very sweet book. I Loved it! Would recommend
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really good! It’s a page turner that has you feeling every emotion right along with the characters.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A predictable love story where everything happened way too fast and easy despite the protagonists actually being toxic and abusive people, not just mild inconveniences like they often are in this genre.
Saying that, I have to give the author and the main characters credit in this story. The abusive relationships in their work environment weren't solved magically, but in the only realistic way one can really ever get free from their abusers - cutting them off, for once and for all, and taking away the very, and the only, thing the abuser ever loved: power. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Fun quick read. Enjoyable characters (well most of them) and good narrators
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The slow burn of the main characters I the the authors work do much I finished in two days
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved it! It took a while for me to really get into it and everything but wow, after the first 100 pages (I read along), and once you get to know the situation, the characters, you’re in for the ride, the novel, and you’ll be thankful for it!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was such a workplace romance trope. I loved it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not her best but it wasn’t bad. Not as much tension between the protagonists as some of her other work (which made the characters and story more interesting.) But it’s cute, mindless romantic fun - good beach read.

I read this on audio and liked it.
Rusty was crazy but made me smile many times.I loved how caring James was and I liked everything about Carey.
Overall, the book was okay not my favorite of the authors but not bad as well. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Unfortunately didn’t have that spark that most of their books do. Not bad, but not great either.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Enjoyed this one as much as all of the rest! Thanks for the entertainment!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I liked that Piper grew but stayed true to herself
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I’ll say this one was almost 4 stars. It was cute and had some really funny parts. Pretty good dialogue and the setting was super relevant to current pop culture.
What I liked: The story line was creative and relevant. Carey kind of reminded me of Hazel in the way she is little quirky and she just is who she is. The banter between Carey and James was good although I would have liked to see their relationship develop a little more.
What I didn’t like: The Tripps are a carnival and their story just ends - I realize this story isn’t about them but after spending so much of the book in their drama I would expect to know a little more of what happens to them. There wasn’t much character development. 80% of the book takes place over a matter of a couple weeks and then it jumps forward six weeks. That left a lot of holes for me. I feel like there could be much more to Carey and James’ story.
Overall it was a cute, East read and I would recommend to anyone who enjoys contemporary
romance. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I thought it was pretty cute. Don't remember too much, but it was pretty good.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5My interest was not captured by characters & writting level.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was as much of an enjoy as it was frustrating... there were time where i wanted to throw it against the wall.... but it ended well... it kept me on my toes as i really wanted to know what happened.
am glad Carey finally stood for herself and got the life she wanted.
If you enjoy drama then this book is for you... but be warned since it does contain emotional boss abuse. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/53 ?
Really cute read with a blasé beginning that had me guessing if it was going to be worth it. I wasn't a fan of how the audiobook was narrated in that, there were both male and female narrators yet with their individual chapters they altered their voice to be the other person. It made it a little funny sounding at the attempts to be the other.
Either way, I'm glad I stuck with it, I found Carey and James to be endearing. At first they weren't that fond of each other but before they knew it they had to join forces to help save face on the Tripp's marriage. They had a reputation of America's DIY "IT" couple yet behind the scenes it was an all out hot mess. And it was Carey and James please to keep them in check.
One thing I was a little confused by, why they were being interviewed and what investigation what going on ... The house fire?? Maybe I completely missed it in the beginning, since disinterest was looming, but not sure it was actually mentioned. Anyway, I did love how it all ended and that Carey finally received all that she deserved from the get go, even if it was 10 years late! Her character definitely grew up and learned from her experiences, coming out on top. Overall, I enjoyed it enough.
