Sonnets of the Mind

About this ebook
There is the executive who indulges in lust, alcoholism, drug abuse and promiscuity which sooner or later easily take their toll. Affluence and general decay all over the place: loss, love, revelations and social intrigue are all part of the general tone in this book.
And yet in some sonnets of the mind, there are monarch butterflies with wide pulsing wings all over the place and the accumulated pleasure bursts like a sprinkler. So sweet is the moment you want it to last as long as possible; forever. However, in reality, nothing lasts forever; sooner or later the spark disappears.
I only hope this collection of poems will stimulate more recital and debate in different arenas, be it at educational institutions, debating arenas or cultural gatherings.

Sonnets of the Mind - Jacob Wilson Chikuhwa
FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN
It strikes like a cobra
Fear of imaginary shadows
Leaving the brain numbed
Depression the mother Satan
Fear embedded in the heart
Leaving nerves in tartars
Hell expressed by agony
Fear that breeds loss of hope
Leaving one in isolation
Depthless chaos in the brain
Fear that can be confronted
Leaving forces of darkness
Hope put into a great spin
To make the mind numb
And depict ugly faces

DOMESTIC STORM
Thunder, lightning and down pour
Howling, screaming and stamping
Walls and ceiling rattling like hell
No peace and no reconciliation
Like crazy, they end up embracing
Wondering what became of them
They both collapse into the sofa
A torrential downpour of tears
Electrically charged emotion
A ‘trial reconciliation’ hovering
In no time trial over and done
The verdict: innocent on both counts
No good thinking of bad memories
Good times must prevail over bad
Marriage that eternal matrimony
Cemented by the loveable kids

MAMBO JUMBO
This specious room is in such a goddamn mess!
The bay windows are smeared and fly-specked.
It’s like a haunted place at the devil’s mercy.
It can be seen the sills are grainy with soot;
With the gilt mouldings of the pictures chipped.
This is a shade of a habitable and pleasant suite.
The striped grey satin upholstery blotched and worn;
The mahogany table-top branded with rings and burns.
It seems obvious this household is difficult to run.
Everywhere there are piles of rumpled newspapers.
It is quite easy for one to read between the lines;
It’s not even a matter that calls for news crackers.
There are sticky glasses and muddied coffee cups;
One’s appetite can easily drown at the sight.
Here it’s difficult to get clean milk for the pups.
There are full ashtrays, empty cigarette packages;
Walls and ceilings are clogged with smoke.
Lung cancer n emphysema can be heavy baggage.
There is discarded clothing on chairs and sofa;
A foul, smelly backwash issues from this room.
With clogged nostrils one’s health may suffer.
On the carpet’s a shipwreck of discarded clothes.
The place is like a battle ground involving tanks.
Here there’s a transmission of mingled codes.
What’s more to expect in the bedroom or kitchen?
It’s a mystery one can emerge from this mambo jumbo
Yet looking so fresh and beautiful to go out teaching!

NEGATIVE FEELINGS
Rooted in an unhappy and deprived childhood
Unrealistic expectations dashed into a mirage
May be against childhood itself in manhood
Camouflaged unfulfilled sexual anxiety
Against women or men in proximity
May be against sexuality itself as enmity
Originating from parental relationships
Against folklore or some social trend
May be history of poor house stewardship
It doesn’t exonerate one with poor self-image
Negative feelings judged by their effects
To be eliminated and discarded never to emerge.

SUSPICION
Suspicion! Suspicion! Why do you destroy all that we’ve built out of Trust?
You make us look into each other’s eyes as if nothing is happening.
Yet you hide in our minds causing havoc and making our hearts swell.
We have learnt to talk around issues, rather than hone in on their essence.
We strenuously try to avoid getting into conflicting encounters in public.
Yet this is just window dressing to appear at peace with each other.
Deep down you are lurking and hiding inside innocent, bleeding hearts
Suspicion, we acknowledge you exist but why do you try to hide
