    THE END OF THE RAINBOW

    Grief and loss

    Poem #1

    You came when my life was empty,

    You filled my world with sunshine,

    And my heart with joy;

    My life was full of you.

    And now you’ve gone, so swiftly and so silently…

    You were like a dream that flits on,

    Filling a void

    With colour and music

    For just a moment,

    And then leaves,

    Leaving the void emptier than before,

    And darker…

    Poem #2

    I was sitting by the stream,

    When I felt sleep capture me;

    You came to me in a sweet dream,

    And told me how much you loved me.

    And then again, I saw you, dear,

    As if you were still so near;

    Your eyes held in their depths a light,

    And your whole face shone so bright,

    Ah, how sweet, my love, was that one dream

    That I saw while by that stream,

    Till I woke and saw those trees,

    That brought back all your memories;

    But you are gone now, gone from me,

    Though your love is still with me;

    Death has claimed you for its own,

    And I can only sit and mourn.

    Poem #3

    Once again it is spring.

    But you are gone.

    All my dreams have faded,

    Like the flower you gave me so long ago.

    I want to call out to you,

    To cry,

    But I cannot.

    I cannot get through to you.

    Knocking on a door that won’t open-

    That’s all my life is now.

    I look at the picture on the wall-

    A rabbit mailing a letter

    Into a post box that has an OUT OF ORDER sign-

    Just like my trying to get through to you!

    I look at your photograph-

    Even that has begun to fade,

    Like the flower you gave me once.

    That’s all I have left of you now,

    A relic of a broken dream.

    Poem #4

    Sleep tight, my child,

    Sleep tight,

    You are free of this world,

    Free of the cares, the worries,

    You will never know the pain of loss,

    No sorrow shall darken your face,

    No frown shall crease your brow,

    No tears shall wet your cheeks,

    You are at rest now.

    Sleep tight.

    I shall miss you, of course

    I shall miss you.

    I shall miss the chance of knowing you,

    Of watching you grow up,

    I shall miss your first steps,

    Your fingers in mine,

    I shall miss your smile that I’ve seen,

    Only in my dreams,

    I shall miss all the years that we should have had,

    And shall feel cheated.

    Yet, you are at rest now.

    Sleep tight.

    Poem #5

    The battle over, the city is in ruins;

    Its captain slain, its army beaten.

    No more will its people smile,

    No child shall ever play in its streets again,

    The sacred hallows have been desecrated.

    Happiness is a distant memory,

    And the world is a strange, unfriendly place,

    A barren wasteland where nothing blooms.

    Maybe time will dull the pain,

    And blur the edges of memory,

    All that remains now

    Is the black cloud of gloom,

    And the disbelief,

    And anger,

    And the ‘Why?’ that reverberates across the city.

    Maybe the Gods were jealous . . .

    Poem #6

    My friend,

    You I miss,
