Lab5 Distillation
Lab-5 (HySys) (Distillation) Dept. of Chem. Eng. UAE University Dr. Nayef Mohamed Ghasem Objective: by this lab you should be familiar with shortcut distillation and rigorous distillation methods 1. The following example builds a SHORTCUT COLUMN as a typical depropanizer, having the stream Feed as the tower feed. The feed at 207.3 oC, 100 psia inter the column at 1271.5190 lb mole /hr with the following compositions in mole fraction: Ethane 0.0148, propane 0.7315, I-butane 0.0681, n-butane 0.1462, I-Pentane 0.0173, n-pentane 0.015, n-hexane 0.0071. Heavy key in Distillate is Ibutane 0.02 mole fraction; light key in bottom is Propane 0.025 mole fraction for a reflux ratio of 1.5 calculates the minimum reflux ratio and column performance? 2. A rectification column is fed 100 kg mol/h of a mixture of 50% benzene and 50% toluene at 101.32 kPa abs pressure. The feed is liquid at the boiling point. The distillate is to contain 90 mol% benzene and the bottoms 10% benzene. The reflux ratio is 4.52:1. Calculate the kg mol/h distillate, kg mol/h bottoms, and the number of theoretical trays needed? Answer (D=50, W=50 kg mol/h, 4.9 theoretical trays plus reboiler). 3. Repeat problem 2 but use a feed that is saturated vapor at the dew point. Calculate the following: a) Minimum reflux ratio b) Minimum number of theoretical plates at total reflux. c) Theoretical number of trays at an operating reflux ratio of 1.5 (Rm) 4. The feed to a distillation column is at room conditions (T=25 oC, P=1 atm). The concentration of the feed is 50% ethanol 50% iso-propanol in mass fractions. The feed is at a rate of 163 lb/hr. For the reboiler heat duty of 120,000 BTU/hr. Assume number of trays to be 24 and reflux ratio equal 3. Find the conditions of the exit streams? a) Suppose that the heat duty of the boiler is not given can it be solved? b) If the fraction of ethanol in the distillate is 0.7, calculate boiler and condenser heat duty?
