Float Valve Checking

This technical document provides instructions for checking the float valve settings of the seal oil tank in a 500 MW generator seal oil system. It specifies that during erection/pre-commissioning, the seal oil tank cover should be opened for cleaning and the locks removed from two float valves - one for makeup to the tank and one for draining excess oil. The document then lists checks to perform on the float valves, including ensuring free movement of the floats, measuring the free movement length of each float, and inspecting the float balls for physical damage. Performing these checks is important to ensure proper operation of the float valves and avoid issues with low hydrogen purity during operation.

Checking of Float Valve Setting of Seal Oil Tank 500 MW Generator Seal oil System In 500 MW Generator Seal Oil System, two float valves are provided in Seal Oil Tank to maintain oil level. One valve is in the Make-up line to Seal Oil Tank and other is for draining of excess oil from the Seal Oil Tank to Seal Oil Storage Tank. These valves come in locked condition to site from the works to avoid any damage during transit. During Erection/ pre-commissioning stage, seal oil tank cover is opened for cleaning the tank and removing the locking provided in these valves. After removing the locking, following checks should be made on these float valves: 1. Check free movement of both floats in the guide rod provided. There should not be any obstruction and link rod should be vertical without any bending. 2. Measure free movement length of both floats. It should be as under For Make up float valve =300 mm For Drain float valve = 140 mm This measurement should be made from float Ball top to horizontal guide rod. 3. Float Ball should be inspected for any physical rupture/ pinhole

These checks are necessary to ensure proper operation of float valves and eliminate the problem of low H2 purity during operation.
