TURBINE STRESS EVALUATOR ( TSE )

(CODE: BTPP/TURBINE/002/ TURBINE STRESS EVALUATOR)

Turbine Stress Evaluator helps the operating engineer to

load or unload the machine quickly without stressing its
component parts.
TSE has three channels, viz. HP Stop Valve (HPSV), HP Shaft
(HPS) and IP Shaft (IPS).
Thermocouples are employed at 50% depth and 100%
depth to measure the temperature of the Turbine metal.
The Steam touched surface temperature (ie the 100%
depth) is termed as inner temperature (Ti) and that of the
temperature at 50 % depth of wall is termed as Mean
temperature (Tm).
For the HPSV the Ti and Tm are directly measurable and so
the actual process values of them are taken for computation.
Whereas for the HPS and the IPS the Ti is taken from the
temperature of the steam nearer to the Shaft. The Tm of the shaft
– which is a rotating body- is computed from Ti, based on factors
like shaft diameter and the thermal conductivity of the shaft
material.
Ti (inner) and Tm (mean) are measured or computed for the
above three channels. Actual Load and actual Speed measured
are also fed to TSE for the purpose of computing available
margins. With these available inputs the function generators in
TSE calculate the corresponding Load margins.
Display and Alarm provisions are made in DCS for assisting
the Board engineer.
Ti and Tm for HPSV, HPS and IPS are displayed along with
their upper and lower temperature margins. The minimum of

these three temperature margins (HPSV/ HPS/ IPS) are the ones
taken for consideration. Inbuilt function generators in TSE
compare the allowed temperature difference corresponding to Tm
and based on this, upper and lower margins are calculated.
The Load margins are derived from these temperature
margins by function generators in TSE. Load margins are
displayed in DCS. Upper(Pu) and lower(Pl) Load margins can be
applied to the generated load to know the amount of load that
can be raised or lowered at any point of time.
If the upper or lower load margin is exceeded, the
corresponding steam temperature can be reduced or increased
respectively, to remain within the allowable margin.
For slight variations in margins it is advised to wait for
sometime or to reduce the rate of change (loading/unloading) to
keep the temperature margins within permissible limits.
Some pre-calculated test values are provided for checking
the healthiness of TSE functioning. This test facility can be made
use of to check for any faults in the TSE measurement /
computing channels.
