EMERGING TECHNOLOGY PROJECT

ITEC7445 Jamie Nicholson

Reading Eggs is an online tool that supports reading instruction in the classroom. It supports each childs learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons that allow children to progress at their own rate. Reading Eggs is available for family use at home or whole school packages.

COBB COUNTY VISION:

Technology serves as a tool to engage students in quality learning experiences requiring higher-order thinking skills to solve authentic problems. Reading Eggs engages students with reading lessons and spelling lessons that apply to their ability to read and write in the world. Students and teachers will use technology to extend learning beyond the classroom and the school day. Students are able to log in to their accounts at home to continue their progress. Reading Eggs takes the phonics instruction from the classroom and gives the students a chance to apply it in a fun, interactive way. Students, teachers, and educational leaders will use technology to assess, monitor, analyze, and report student performance data immediately to inform instructional planning and provide timely targeted feedback to students and teachers. Progress reports are available for teacher use on Reading Eggs and teachers have the ability to control the lessons a student is completing.

In order to ensure equitable access to Reading Eggs, a school wide plan should be put in place that communicates the expectations for how to use Reading Eggs in the classroom. Also, each teacher should send home the parent letters found on Reading Eggs to ensure equitable access from home as well.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS
I believe that in order to ensure equitable access, the school must provide a computer lab that has a Promethean board and projector for whole group instruction, enough computers to accommodate an entire classroom, and headphones for each computer.

With all of this equipment, Reading Eggs will be more effective and efficient.

Teachers and students have technical support from the Media Specialist, Cobb County Tech Support Employees, and the Reading Eggs Support Team.

Luckily, Reading Eggs requires minimal equipment and software with large benefits. With minimal equipment and software needs, the less likely things are to go wrong.

LIMITATIONS OF THIS TECHNOLOGY

For my school, one of the largest limitations that Reading Eggs has is that it does not specifically address the needs of our ESOL students. They need MORE vocabulary development than Reading Eggs offers. It does address vocabulary, but our students need vocabulary lessons throughout the lessons.

I do feel that Reading Eggs is safe and healthy for our students use because everything is age appropriate and because this is a paid for program, it doesnt have inappropriate pop-ups on the site.

Individual Pricing

School Pricing Each school will have different needs. In order to find the price for your school or district, you must contact Reading Eggs.

POTENTIAL FUNDING
Potential funding for Reading Eggs would come from Title I funding. This is a perfect resource to use Title I money on because it addresses reading standards across every elementary grade level.

If for some reason Title I money doesnt work out, PTA money could be used. We could hold a Fall Festival and other events that would fund raise for the purchase of this site.

HOW THE EMERGING TECHNOLOGY COULD BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM

Describe how the emerging technology could be used to meet content standards and student technology standards.
Reading Eggs does a fantastic job of meeting reading foundation standards and technology standards. With the technology standards, students have to be able to use a mouse appropriately, navigate the desktop and the internet, use keyboarding skills, and use the computer to further learning. Reading Eggs helps with all these. As for the reading foundation standards in grades K-1, I couldnt have found a better resource to meet these standards. Reading Eggs, literally meets each and every reading foundation standard from print concepts to phonemic awareness.

Describe how the emerging technology promotes specific student learning goals.
Reading Eggs promotes student learning goals in the areas of listening and speaking, research-based learner centered strategies, and higher-order thinking skills. During the program students will be listening to a lot of speech and they will have to respond in various ways; finding the sentence that was just spoken, answering comprehension questions about a story. The higher-order thinking skills really apply to the upper grade level Eggspress site. The students start to find the fun in reading and are continually tasked to push themselves to the next level of reading. And finally, Reading Eggs and Eggspress are strong in research-based learner centered strategies. Each student moved through the program at their own pace and at their own level. If the student needs simple phonics work, that is where the lessons will start for them. The program is centered around the learner and their achievements.

HOW THE EMERGING TECHNOLOGY COULD BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM

Describe how the emerging technology could be used to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all students.
Reading Eggs can be used for differentiation very easily. At the beginning of the students use of Reading Eggs, he/she are asked to take a quiz that will place them in the appropriate lessons. Now, if as the teacher you feel the student has been placed incorrectly, you can go in and change this. Reading Eggs can be used for advancing student skills and also remediation. If you are using for remediation, you may assign the student specific skills to practice and also a quiz. With the progress monitoring, you have simple-to-get data points with researched based strategies.

Describe how the emerging technology promotes communication locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community.
Communication between the school and home with Reading Eggs is simple. Reading Eggs has already created multiple parent resources for the school to use when communicating what Reading Eggs is and how it can be used at home and school. I think that it is also important to note that since many of our families do not have computers in the home, this promotes further the use of community resources like the library.

THE RESEARCH
The program has been developed by a highly experienced team of educational teachers, writers and developers. The Reading Eggs program focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success. It completely supports what children learn at school and will help to improve your childs results at school. Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs takes reading foundation skills and incorporates them into an interactive, student-led program. The research for this program is in the student progress reports since the reading foundation skills have years of research and evidence behind them. If you want to know if Reading Eggs is working for your student, use the progress reports.

PLAN FOR IMPLEMENTATION

Step 1: Introduce the Reading Eggs program to the staff. Go through the different aspects, cost, standards addressed, and potential for use.
Step 2: Gather feedback from the teachers about the program after they have had some time to explore it. Step 3: If the decision is to purchase the program, get the appropriate funding to do so. Step 4: Implement a school wide plan on how to use Reading Eggs. I would suggest that it be used on a twice, weekly basis.

Step 5: Continue to gather feedback on Reading Eggs from teacher surveys and student progress reports.

REFLECTION
Throughout this process, I learned that there are a lot of programs out there that claim to help students progress with their reading skills. But, they are not all created equal. Many had large gaps in reading foundations. I found Reading Eggs to be the most well-rounded program. It was a bonus that students were able to access it from home as well. Reading Eggs does a great job of having the program be student led. It continues to modify itself according to the students needs. I believe that the research behind this project has strengthened my professional practice. I feel more confident in my abilities to obtain a great technology resource for my colleagues and then present it to them in an understandable, nonbiased way. It is of great importance to me to be a support for them and have their opinions matter more than my own when it comes to tools that I will be asking them to use in their own classrooms. I hope to be able to work as a Technology Coach one day and put all that I am learning into practice.
