BACK TO THE

FUTURE
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

TO KNOW THAT WE DESIGN THINGS FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES AND USERS
TO EVALUATE PRODUCTS AND IDENTIY IDEAS TO USE IN OUR OWN WORK
TO MAKE LABELLED DIAGRAMS FROM DIFFERENT VIEWS SHOWING SPECIFIC FEATURES
DESIGN BRIEF
YOUR TASK IS TO DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT A PROTOTYPE OF HOLY NAME
SCHOOL FOR THE YEAR 2089
Student Name: Gemma Madden & Emily Buccella

Grade: 6L

Investigating:

Analysing the
situation

Considerations
What are some things
that have changed at
Holy Name school
over time? What will
be important in a
school of the future?
Think about
technology, space,
enrolments etc.

Analysing the situation
Changes- 3 classrooms (then) 15 classrooms (now)
Nuns taught
What will be important for a school in the
future?-
More qualified first aid staff
Choice of languages (all grades/language lab)
Latest technology
More classroom for higher population
More evacuation plans
More playground
More sick bay (expand/space) (office)

Write a brief
Write a short
Write a brief

statement giving the
general outline of the
problem to be solved.

We are creating a school for the future.
In this design brief we include our ideas and reflections.
In this design brief we think about the facilities and space
to provide in 2089.

Research the
problem
Think about ways in
which your
considerations can
be
solved/accommodated
for. E.g. If you
decide that your
school needs space
for increasing
numbers, what are
some ways in which
you can create space?
Research the problem
Sick bay: We all want to put automatic doors
In the sick bay area near the office. If there is an
emergency and we have to get a wheel chair or big object
into the area, the automatic doors would open
immediately.
How: The white brick wall that opens to the sick bay
will get extended. We will build in automatic doors with a
sensor.

Technology: In 2089 the school might have a higher
population. The whole might have more online programs
and the technology is going to have to be efficient. If a
whole class is on the internet, we will technology issues or
the WIFI cant connect.
How: The school will need technology that is efficient,
in the future a class might have more online activities or
resources to use. Holy Name will buy the latest
technology to last for a year. Every classroom will have
WIFI connection.

Space: Over 75 years the schools population has
grown. Its gone from 3 classroom to 15. In 75 years in the
future the schools population will become even higher.

How: The school in 2089 will definitely need an
extension and bigger classrooms. Now (2014) there are
three classes of grade fours, thats because of more
enrolment forms. There may be more classes of each
grade in 2089.

Designing:

Write a
specification
This detailed
description of
the problem
spells out what
the design must
achieve and what
limitations will
affect the final
solution.
Grade 1 to 6. (Prep comes from another campus).

Work out
possible
solutions
Combine the
ideas from
your
investigation
to suggest
several
possible design
solutions.
Sketch several
possibilities on
paper.

Select a preferred solution

Producing:

Prepare
working
drawings and

construct a
prototype.
Draw, to scale,
detailed plans
of your new
school.

Question 4:

Modifying:
List and justify any modifications that you have made.

Write a Report:
Write a report that explains the process you followed to complete your
future school design. Reflect upon all the stages in the process and
justify your work. Discuss the investigating, planning, designing,
evaluating and modifying of your design.
