    MANUFACTURING ORDER #9: CHALK MIXTURE


    FORMULATION:
    Calcium carbonate.400 mg
    Tragacanth..40 mg
    Syrup2 ml
    Cinnamon water....0.08 ml
    Chloroform water..10 m

    DESCRIPTION : A convenient medicine forcommondiarrhoea, made of preparedchalk,gumarabic,glycerine, andcinnamon water. Dose, a tablespoonful for a grown person. Most frequently
    something is added to make it more " binding " or astringent, ascatechu, paregoric, etc.
    Official Preparation: Mistura Cretae. Chalk mixture. Chalk suspended in cinnamonwater by
    means of gum and sweetened with syrup.
    DOSE: 1-2 fl. oz.
    Action. - Carbonate of calcium or chalk possesses theastringentandantacidpowers oflimeitself,
    and is without its irritating qualities. It can therefore be given in much larger doses, and so chalk
    is used, instead ofliquor calcis, in the diarrhoea of adults accompanied by acidity.
    Uses - Chalk may be used as a dusting powder to the skin in excoriations, burns, and ulcers. It
    forms a useful tooth-powder. Internally it serves to arrest diarrhoea, and is often given, whatever
    be the cause of the diarrhoea; but when the disease depends upon some irritating substance in the
    intestine, theirritantshould be removed by a dose ofcastor oilprevious to the administration of the
    chalk. In the form of whiting, chalk forms a usefulantidotein cases of poisoning by acids, and
    especially by oxalic acid.
