Reflection 8
I went to school at 7:30. The day started with the assembly, it was
in the outdoors playground this time. They sang the national
anthem so beautifully and loudly. It was very nice.
They had Arabic for the first class. They had their lab quiz as usual.
The teacher and I lined them up. I took the girls' line and the
teaxher takes the boys'. We went to the lab and I tried helping the
students by reading the words and helping with their questions and
such. After that, they lined up again and went back to class. At the
class, the teacher reminded me that I am going to teach today. I
played the song about the alphabet until they sat down. Next, I
chose 3 students and asked them few questions about the song that
I played. I asked them about the words that were showed in the
video. That was the engagement part.
Afterwards, i had some sponge letter with magnet in the back. I put
those letters in order on the board. I tried making all the students
participate with me. In this activity, I said the words out loud then
asked someone to pick all the letters that go into that word, then
they write it down. This activity helps them get familiar with the
letter shapes. For example, how does this letter look like in the
beginning of the word? How about the middle of the word?
Then, the teacher asked me to do their revision for their finals
instead of her doing it. I felt very responsible and confident that she
trusted me with such a big responsibility. After that, I gave each
student a mini board to write on it. I speak out the word and the
wrote it then the teacher and I go check on them. The next activity
was a writing one. I chose two pairs of students and get them to
write different words and see who wrote it faster and who is correct.
I made sure that all the students have done this and that they all
understand before moving on. I made the teacher choose two boys
and two girls as the ones who were participating well and they
weren't making noise in the class.
I told the teacher to assess me and tell me what I did right and what
I should work on and give me feedback. She let me teach the entire
lesson.
The next class, they had English. The teacher gave them some
sentences and made them memorise it really well and gave them a
revision. She writes the word on the board then asks them to write it
in the middle of the notebook. Then again, they write it in the
beginning of the notebook. And one last time, she erases it from the
board and asks them to write it in the end of the notebook. They
didn't get to finish all the sentences as the break started.
The first thing they do when the break starts is that they go wash
their hands. They eat then go to the playground then come back to
the class. After the break they had a computer test. The teacher and
I helped many students because the test was quite hard for them.
Then they went back to class.
Before the break, they finished two sentences, and aftet the
computer test they continued with the rest. Then the teacher asked
me to teach. I taught till the end of my practicum time.
The teacher gave me a worksheet. The way I explained the
worksheet to them is by making them put their finger on the
sentence and read it as a whole class. Then they search for
keywords and write the answers in their papers. When they finish,
they raise their hands and I don't move on until everyone is done.
They answer the question loudly when everyone is done. I did this
technique with all of the 15 questions that I had.
After that we moved to the book activities. The activities are about
shaped. The questions were something like "How many corners does
a triangle have?" Or "What shape is this?" I solved the questions on
the board. A student told me that he doesn't understand so I asked
him to come to the board as I drew the shape for him. We counted
the sides of the shape together and gave him another example to
make sure that he understood.
Until the end of my day, I was teach. I taught in almost all of the
classes and the time passed quickly. I really enjoyed that day and I
got positive feedback from my teachers so I feel like I have learned
a lot and gained more experience.
