Project 1 Outline
Organization and Culture of Computer Programmers
Thesis: What is the organizational culture of a computer programmer?
8
Abstract
What is the organizational culture of a computer programmer? Computer programming
is a vital career field in todays world. Almost everything involves computers such as
information, education, communication, banking, cars, phones, etc. Computer
programmers define their cultural structure through the hierarchy of the company, duties,
culture, activities, and skills.

Introduction
There is a high demand on computers in todays world. The whole world is
associated with computer technology on a daily basis. People rely on computers for
information, banking, communication, etc. The bigger problem is that there are only a
few people who know how to write and code computer programs. Computer
programmers are a culture of making and building code from scratch. Computer
programmers are a vital career field in our society. What is the organizational culture of a
computer programmer on a daily basis? The organizational culture of a computer
programmer will be associated under the hierarchy of the company, duties, culture and
activities.
Methodology
For my project 1 assignment, I interviewed Mr. Peterson Buhler about the
organizational culture of a computer programmer. Mr. Buhler Works for the LDS Tech
Company that is located in Riverton Utah. I picked this company for my interview
because not only is it a large tech firm for the LDS church, but also, Ive always wanted
to get a job there when I graduate. First, I called and scheduled my appointment with one
of the company supervisors, Mr. Buhler, two weeks before the interview. The interview
was held in Mr. Buhlers office on the second floor, where we could see the rest of the
employees doing their work on the first floor. Mr. Buhler greeted me in his office and we
both introduced ourselves and got to know each other for a little bit before we started the
interview. I started asking questions to Buhler about the culture of programmers from my
questionnaire that I prepared for the interview.

Hierarchy
During the interview with Mr. Buhler, he went through the organizational
structure of the company, or the hierarchy in the firm, step by step. The hierarchy of the
company is divided in five stages, which are director, managers, supervisors, team leads
and employees. These five groups have their own tasks, or duties, to perform on a daily
basis. Supervisors, team leads and general employees work on the second floor. The
director and managers offices are located on the first floor. Employees are under the
supervision of team leads; both team leads and employees are under the supervision of
supervisors, with managers answering to the director. When a major problem occurs in
the company, they will have to pass the problem up through the order of the hierarchy.
Duties
Developing computer programs is the primary duty of a computer programmer,
exforcsys.com. There are several duties of a programmer, but establishing computer
programs is the main one. One of many duties of a computer programmer is to monitor
tasks to check if the program works or not. Checking emails, sending memos,
maintaining computer databases or preparing a proposal for the management team or an
outside party are other duties of a programmer. According to exforcsycs.com,
programmers may use telephone, email, or in person to improve individual
communication with others for using a computer program.
Culture
Studying the culture of the LDS Tech Company, their dress code is to dress formal
to work every day except Friday; you wear casual clothes to work on Friday, but shorts
11
are not allowed. The company provides three shifts such as day, swing, and graveyard; it
is a 24 hour service for all the LDS companies in Utah and other areas. Managers and
supervisors are the only ones who have offices. Team leads and the rest are working in an
open area where all the computers are located. Managers encourage each other to work
together as a team when there is a problem. The magic happens when they collaborate in
a room as a team to get input into for a new program, said Buhler.
Activities
A daily activity of a programmer is to interact with computers all day by using
computer systems including software and hardware to build program, writing software,
set up functions, enter data, or process information. Also developing specific goals and
plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work. Getting information by
observing, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources. Solving
problems, making decisions to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the
best solution.
Discussion
Hierarchy
Hierarchy is a really important virtue to any job and most jobs have an
organizational order in their company. Hierarchy is the vital order because it puts you on
a different level to understand which part is you in the company and which level the
others are. Compared to other jobs this job has an extra level; most jobs are usually
divided in three levels like manager, supervisor and employees but no team lead. To me is
important to have a team lead to work along side with the employees everyday to help
them and report problems to the supervisor when something comes up.
12
Duties
In todays world every thing involves technology, thats why to me, programmers
are in high demand. Computer programmers are important because they provide you
with technical support to individuals that use computer programs developed in the
company and outside parties. They write, update and maintain computer programs or
software packages to handle specific jobs, such as tracking inventory, storing or
retrieving data, or controlling other equipment. Also, preparing graphs, tables, analytical
data displays - which show the progress of a computer programs.
Culture
I have always liked to work for a company that dresses up formal to work. I
believe that it is a really important thing because it shows your customers and other firms
how neat you are and that you are a trusted company. Working with computers allows
me to use my skills and knowledge fixing problems and helping the team with other
technical support. Another thing I like about this company is that the managers always
encourage people to work together and help each other with a problem and that is a
culture that will build a great team effort in the company. What I like about computer
programmers is all about the culture of building something from scratch.
Activities
Creating program is something that I wanted to do for living so that I can write
computer programs for various purposes. Also because it involves critical thinking, uses
logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions,
conclusions or approaches to problems. Programming provides active learning by
13
understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem
solving and decision-making.
Conclusion and Recommendation
Majoring in computer programming, this research paper helped me to know and
take an inner look into the culture and organizational structure of a computer
programmer. Through the interview with Mr. Buhler I have learned a lot of new things
about my future career as a computer programmer. I also learned the importance of the
hierarchy in the company, and studying the culture in the work place. I learned about the
duties and activities and what kind of tasks they perform on a daily basis. Through all the
information that I gathered during the interview and online about my topic, it helped me
to practice and prepare myself about what kind of career that I am going into when I
graduate. This really helped me so that I can study my career field before I go into it. I
think computer programmer is a perfect fit for me.
