Dust Suppression System PDF

The document describes dust suppression systems for stockyard areas and transfer towers. For stockyard areas, the system uses high pressure fog nozzles installed inside covered sheds to create small water droplets that immediately attach to dust particles, suppressing dust. For transfer towers, the low pressure fog system reduces dust by bonding particles to fine water mist, increasing particle mass so dust settles back to its source with minimal water addition of less than 0.1%. Both systems provide efficient dust control with much lower water usage than conventional spraying.

Dust Suppression System for Stockyard Area

General
The FOG system is used for dust suppression with almost no be-wetting of material and
machinery.
With 40-60 bar water pressure and special laser drilled nozzles water droplets of 7-10
micron are created.
These small particles have a very low surface tension and connect with dust particles
immediately.
With nozzle pipes and FOG canons, the fog is transported to the dust source. Nozzles
are used on conveyors and for short distances. FOG canons are used on successfully
wherever falling material causes dust repression which will be balanced out by the fan
pressure and keeps the dust this way in the material.
Application
The FOG system is considered for covered coal stockpiles area only. The FOG
canons are installed on top of roof inside the covered shed at suitable distance.

Dust Suppression System for Transfer Towers

General Description
The FOG dust suppression system reduces the dust emission, which arises when
handling and processing materials. To do this, water is atomised into the fine particles
under a pressure of 20-30 bar. The dust particles in the air settle as a result of the
fogging with the finest of water drops even without the addition of wetting agents,
which reduce the surface tension of the water. In order that the dust particles
suspended in the air combine with the fine water drops, it is necessary that the drops
are very similar in their dimension to those of the dust. This prevents the dust particles
being passed around the water drops due to the higher flow velocity.
The different effect of the fine and large water droplets

The FOG system therefore reduces the amount of dust by means of the suspended
particles falling back directly to where they originated as a result of increasing their
mass. The fog produced, which ensures this effect, adds a small quantity of water at the
same time to the material (less than 0.1%). In doing so, the water is not simply
atomised in the conventional manner. The droplets of fog produced in the FOG system
have a diameter of about 100 to 130 m, thus reducing the surface tension and
improving the connectivity with the dust particles. This means that the dust particles in
the air are moistened with water even without chemical additives to reduce the surface
tension.
The principal of depositing dust is based on the fact that the surface tension decreases
with the fineness of the water drops and the affinity to the dust increases. From this, it
follows that the drops can moisten the dust particles and no longer repel these. The dust
particles are bound with fine water particles as a result of the wetting and settle due to
the increase in weight. The addition of water on the material can be further reduced to
the fine, suspend able water mist. Water is not deposited directly onto the transported
material. A high degree of efficiency is achieved as a result of the water mist spreading
out to fill the space. A further advantage in comparison with removal by suction lies in
the possibility of being able to accurately adjust the effect of the process. This means
that it is possible to position the nozzles in such a way that more water mist is produced
at the location of the largest dust emission. The large spectrum of nozzles with differing
water throughout rates offer a further means to control the effect and the addition of
water. The dust is returned into the discharge flow following the bonding with water.
The water consumption of FOG dust suppression system is approx. 10% of that of
conventional spraying systems.
