A direct cool refrigerator has a separate freezer box exposed to the air, allowing moisture in the air to condense on the freezer box and accumulate as ice. The amount of ice formed is controlled by a thermostat. The basic components of a refrigerator are a compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and refrigerant enclosed in a piping system. The compressor increases pressure and pumps the refrigerant into the condenser where it loses heat and condenses to liquid, then flows through an expansion valve or capillary into the evaporator where it absorbs heat, cooling the refrigerator cabinet. The drier absorbs moisture in the system.

A capillary is a very small aperture tube which allows the liquid refrigerant under high pressure to expand by entering into the low pressure zone (evaporator)
