INSTALLATION
ANTENNA CONSIDERATIONS Next to the trunsoeiver, antennais the most the imporlanlcomponenr d successlul in communicJtions station, as the communication range is directly related to the efficiency ol the entennc. Thereforc, great careshouldbe takenjn the installation of the antenna system. lf a proper antennais not otherwise available, see yolu Yaesudealerfor a speciallyfactory adjusted YA-10 singleband dipole antenna, YA-ll dual band dipole antenna,or RSL scriesantenna(for mobileinstallations). These antennas capable are of meetingmost rcquircments. The FT-180A requires load impedance 50 r of ohms at the operating iiequency. tf the load impodancc differsgreatlyfrom this figure, the final amplifier protective circuit will causethe power output to decrease. this impedance If cannot be sgcuredon all dcsiredchannels antennatuner an must beemployed orderto providea 5o-ohm in load impedance the tftnsmitter. for The followi g sectionwill describe two common types of antennaswhich satisiy the impedanoe roqrirement the FT-180A. ol (1) Doublet Antenna The Doublet,or Dipole antenndconsists a halfof wavelengthof wire, cut into two equal sections and fed at the center. At this feedingpoint, an antenna balunmay be utilizedto prcventunwantcd radiation from the coaxialcable.Maximumradiation exists at right anglesto the wire. Ceramic insulatorsshould be installedon both endsof the antenna, irnd a suitablecenterinsulatormust irlso be Lrsed. llowever, some types of antennabaluns inclLrde mountinghooks for thc antenna elements, thus eliminating the need for a center insulator. These parts may be obtained from your Yaesu dealer. The correct length fof a doublet or dipole antennacan be determjnedbl, usiig one of the following fonnulasl Length = Length = Cut the appmpdatelength of wirc (allowingsome extra length for fastening) into two equalpieces. Tie one end of each to a cenmic insulato., and connect the other ends to the antennabalun (or center insulator). Connect the coaxial feedline (type RG8A/U or equivalent) the antenna to balun. lf an antennabalun is not beingused, connectthe center conductor of the coaxial feedlirreLo onc sideof the centerinsulator's wire, and connectthe shield of the coaxial line to the other side of the center insulator (therc is no direct connectionof one half of the dipole to the other). The far ends of ihe wire elements may then be secured, using nylon rope tied to the insulators. Usingsupporting poles, hoist the dntennaas high an in the clearas Possible. Checkto seethat the SWRis lessthan l:1.5 ut the operating frequency. If so, the installation is complete. The dipole antenna works best if it is plaoedhigh and in the clear, so use the highest support possible.Whcn building the supports, rcmembcr that they should form a line perpendicularto the line representing shortest the distance to the station with which communioation is desired.

(2) QuarterWave Wirc Antenna Usually constructedin a vertical configudtion, the quarterwaveantenna sometimes is usedin base stationinstallations. However, is more commonly it usedon shipsor yachts, especially when the space for a doublet antennais not available. The length of the quarterwaveantennacan be determined by usingone of the followingformulas: 234 Lmglh = ;::-;;;E1t.25 Freq(MHz) (leet) -"- "'
The wire hils one end connected to a cemmic insulator, which is, in tun, hoisted up a nonmetallic mast. The other end of the wre is connectedto the center conductorof the coaxial oable. For basestation installatjons the higher at frequency ohannels, the vertical elementmay be madeof aluminumflrbing(self-supporting). The shieldof the coax is connected a good RF to ground. The ground systemmay consistof six to twelvewires3% longerthan tho radiator, extending radially from the centorol the aDtenna bu cd lnd ground.A cold slightly beneaththe suifaceof the water pipe may provide a usablegroundin many instances. On yachts, the ground lbil in the hull must be used. The vertical radiator must be insulated from grcund, and it should not touoh any trces, buildings, rigging(on yachts). or For all antennatypes,be certainthat the FT-l80A meter needle, when switched to the PO (REF) position, staysin the GREEN z.oneof the meter soale while transmitting. the deflectionis outside If of the GREBNzone, the antenna must be checked or readjusted the correctimpedance. for
CROUND CONNECTION The FT-l80A shouldbo oonnected a goodearth to gound for best performzmce and safety. Use a heavy bmided wie, not morc than 3 meters in length, for connectionto the station groundbus. The groundconnection the transciver at shouldbe madeat the rear panelGND stud. Whena vefiical or single wire antenna is usecl,a good ground connection essential. is

The selected AF signal from analoggate eroos is deliverd to an active lowpass filter at e3ooe (2SC1815Y), which eliminates high-pitchnoise any on the audio signal. It is then delivered buffer to passes Qroro(2SCl8l5Y). Next, this signal through a potentiometer, which controlsthe AF output, to audio power amplifier Q3or, (ppC2002V), and is then delivered throughJ3oo6 the speaker. to A portion ol the RX IF signal from e,oo7 is delivercd to three stages of noise amplifier, a,or?,Q'0,6andQ,o,a(2SC1583). Eachindividual transistor contains two sections, whicl are configured as differential amplifiers. When a carner or noise-freesignal is rcceived, the noise signal is rectifiedby D.I)zz,D,a,1 (1N60), producing a DC voltage. This DC voltage is amplified by (2SClEl5Y),which charges Q10,5 C,,:o for noise blanker AGC purposes. This AGC voltage is usedto controlthe gainofQror?ande,o16,When pulse-type noise is received, Dro* and Dror3 rectify the noise signal, which controls noise blanker switch Q?ors. Noise pulsesare of very short duration, but high amplitude.Because the very short time constant of of the RroeT/C,r,s path, ACC voltageis discharge not induced by theseshort durationpulses. Therefore, the noise amplifiers operate at full gain, prcviding maximum voltageto the baseof e,o,a. When a desiredsignaland noisepulseare received simultaneously, the blanking action is not impaired, becouse relativediffercnce the berween rne desired signal and the noisepulseis still high.
