Issue 1

Welcome to my latest zine, Old War Horses. Named, obviously, after all the old gamers Ive known. Weve been through many battles and seen great heights of play in all our years but were not ready yet to go into the West. This zine will cover probably about 48 to 50 issues (as my last two zines have doneOne Thousand and One Nights and One Night and Switching to Guns) and will continue with a lot of good gaming content. Please let me know what you think as I always welcome feedback.

gravity's gone

Ive been kicking an idea round about my head for a while now and figure its good to write it down. What would happen if you mixed the Serenity /Firefly Verse with Pinnacles Deadlands Reloaded? Well, a whole bunch of fun is my thinking. And so I plan on making a full campaign set in this Verse, complete with characters, situations and setting info. Here are some of the influences that I can attribute to this thought.

music

My sister sent me a CD a while ago with music from a group called the Driveby Truckers. They are from Alabama and have a distinct sound, with a good Southern flair. One of their songs is called Gravitys Gone and every time I hear it on my iPod, it invokes a feeling that is EXACTLY like the situations that Mal and his crew get into in the Firefly TV series and the Serenity movie. If you have the opportunity to listen to DBT, do so. Theyve got some good stuff.

podcasts

Ive listened and relistened to the old Rolemonkeys podcast Serenity sessions and boy, did they sound like they were having a great time. Mick, Mark, Clay, Chris and Max really did a good job of roleplaying, fitting in the tropes of the setting and hitting all the complications/wringing all the drama and comedy out of the Verse. I found myself wanting to play the game simply because of their podcast. Hopefully soon, the sessions will be online again on the Rolemonkeys site so you can listen yourself. Also, I recommend the Signal, another fine Serenity/Firefly podcast.

issue 1 Serenity RPG

I picked this beauty up after listening to the Rolemonkeys. And at GenCon 2008, I bought the Serenity Adventures. Its a great game, with good setting info and reads very much as youd expectnot dry and dusty like some game books but with a good talkin familiarity. The game mechanics are pretty good but I prefer Savage Worlds and since this is going to be a Deadlands game, that's the actual game rules that Ill use.

Deadlands reloaded

My game group, the Corvis Monkey Troupe (Ive mentioned them before in my previous zines), is all things Savage Worlds. When we discovered it (or were formally introduced at the Goldsteins bar mitzva so many years ago), we took it by the hand, ran it through its paces, smashed, trashed and gutted it, blasted it, threw in a Balrog or two for fun and zombies, plenty of zombies, tried every different setting we could think of to run and played the heck out of it. We realized that it was the simplest game to run for busy professionals like ourselves, so its become the default system, replacing longtime GURPS and BESM in our subconscious as the goto. Deadlands Reloaded, however, has never been run. But thats about to change. Oh, yes.

those pesky PDFs

One of the advantages of Savage Worlds is the fanbasepeople who are more than willing to write setting and rules PDFs for their favorites and share. And a couple of them have been on the Serenity/Firefly setting, including Firefly Savage Worlds by J.L. Herbert and Mark A. Siefert, and Savage Serenity by Jack Holcomb. Reading through these two PDFs gave me the push to give this campaign a try and try I will. What struck me as the final lightning bolt for this game was reading under the heading for frontier planet Ita in Firefly Savage Worlds There is an alliance outpost stationed on the planet to guard the (decommissioned Independent fleet space) hulks, it is often thought of as one of the worst duties an Alliance soldier can be given. Now, what can I do with that situation?
