Notes From the Pastor: Words of thanks and appreciation to Dale Coomes and Mark Peak and their spouses for hanging our crucifix there at the hall. Now we can truly say, finally, we succeeded in hanging Jesus at our hall! Those of you who havent seen it yet, feel free to drop by to see it for yourself. That gives our hall a strong catholic identity. Hopefully we will not scare the non-catholic away from our hall. We also thank Faith Paoni whose research helped us purchase the crucifix at a cheaper price. Also, once more, thank you to Derailed Commodity and the Smith family for picking up the crucifix with their van from the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia and bring it here to us, saving us a thousand dollars for shipping. Derailed Commodity has also donated many aprons for our Meals In His Name volunteers. For that we are really grateful! Thank you also to Larry Hammerbacher for a job well done at our ground by the hall and most of all for not charging us for his labor saving us more than a thousand dollars. May God bless all of you for all your generosity! As classes in our public schools start, we will also be starting on September 12, Wednesday our Catechism Classes. Our parish picnic on Sunday, September 9 th will be at the same time as our back to Catechism Bash! One of the changes we are making this school year is the name CCD to PSR. Do you know what CCD means? Many do not. It means Confraternity of Christian Doctrine which was organized way back 1562 with the purpose of giving religious instructions to the faithful. But as the years passed, especially nowadays, there is no more such organization existing but dioceses and parishes conducting their own religious instructions for our children. Many of the parishes, with or without catholic schools, have been using now the phrase Parish School of Religion or PSR. In fact, another term is becoming more popular nowadays which conveys more appropriately the goal that Christ wants us to achieve: faith formation. For now Faith Formation is a general term for all our educational efforts for both young and adults (like bible studies, retreats, recollections, doctrinal studies, etc), so we will follow our dioceses encouragement to use the term PSR for our catechetical instruction for our children. Enrollment forms are now available at the back of the Church for our parents to fill up. You may submit them at the parish office or give it to me after the weekend masses before our PSR starts. We thank our coordinators for this school year: Janel Scales and Barb Duling for the afternoon classes and Michelle Puckett for our evening classes. Next Sunday(9/02/2012) 10:00 AM E. Wilson, J. St. Augustine, A Story of Classic Conversion One of the greatest saints of the Church--a Bishop and teacher, whose writings have influenced Christianity even to our own time--spent a good part of his early life trying to avoid becoming a Christian! He was born in North Africa in 354 A.D., a part of Africa that was ruled by the Romans. His father was a Roman official and a pagan, but his mother, Monica, was a Catholic. The persecutions had ended a few years earlier and the Church was growing by leaps and bounds. His dad wanted him to be a scholar, but his mother urged him toward the higher life. He was intelligent, good-looking, and wanted to please his mother, so he enrolled as a catechumen and began taking instructions to enter the Church. He soon drifted away from his instructions because he wanted everything about God PROVEN to him. His Dads finances fell and Augustine quit the instructions and education. He discovered what hed been missing--the good times, the girls, and the parties. He went with the wrong crowd and for the next decade or so, led an evil life, embracing pagan religions. At 19, he took a mistress and they had a son. He began teaching in Rome for a time, then they moved to Milan to teach. While there, he met St. Ambrose. Gradually, he saw that his party life was empty and meaningless. Ambroses words moved him, caused him to remember the strength of his mothers faith. Meanwhile, his mother, Monica, decided it was time to get her sons life in order, so she joined him in Milan to help him marry and settle down. Monica had been praying for his eventual conversion for nearly 20 years! Augustine wanted to settle down, but his mind wouldnt give him any peace. One day, as he was reading the letters of St. Paul, he decided to become a Catholic. His mothers prayers were answered when he again became a catechumen in Milan. His son joined him also and father and son were baptized together by St. Ambrose at the Easter Vigil in 387 A.D. Augustine was 33 at the time. He returned to North Africa to distribute all of his possessions to the poor. He became a priest first, then was elevated to bishop, Bishop of Hippo, his own diocese in North Africa, a post he kept for 35 years until his death. He felt hed come to love the Lord so late that he had lots of catching up to do. He made many journeys throughout Europe and Africa and wrote many books and sermons. He was named Doctor of the Church in recognition of his great contributions to theology. Two of his better known books are: The City of God and also Confessions. One of his most impressive statements was: Our hearts were made for Thee, O, Lord, and they are restless until they rest in Thee. He died on August Article by Marcel Normand 28, 430 A.D. His feast day is this Tuesday.
