Mission to Jamaica Group 2 Working This Week
Group 2 arrived on Saturday and continues to work throughout the week until Saturday. We knew that communication would be spotty, but we do know that everyone arrived safely on Saturday. Please keep this group in your prayers. Do you desire to practice more prayer? A wonderful opportunity is here, just for you! Beginning July 18th, David Hughes will be offering a 6 week session on Thursday nights 6:30-7:30 in the choir room. It is going to be a contemplative evening prayer followed by a guided discussion about music and prayer. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring a candle. Questions? It is good to celebrate our freedom together as Americans. At the same time, I am reminded by a friend of mine who wrote, The 4th of July is not about some victory we claimed so long ago. It is about a vision for a nation that we are still working toward. We still have a long way to go. The vision of freedom is one that is always emerging. In the Declaration of Independence, the ratification and signing of which we celebrate on July 4, it boldly proclaims, We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Yet, 1/3 of those who signed the document, including its primary author, Thomas Jefferson, owned slaves. They saw something beyond themselves and their own circumstance. The words are powerful and compelling and I still get goose-bumps when I read them. They present a vision that may not yet in any time or place be realized, including the moment in which they were penned. Our history as a nation is bloody and bruised with the struggle for the freedom and equality articulated in that initial vision. At the same time, it is also filled with great people who stood for equality and who were willing to do what was right even if it was not popular; people who were captured and compelled by that vision of equality and freedom! This week, lets celebrate that vision. More importantly, though, lets allow that vision to capture and compel us so that we will work tirelessly for the freedom and equality of others. As the Apostle Paul reminded us in the Galatians text this past Sunday: For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for selfindulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.
