Riverside Police Arrest Two Separate Individuals for Felony Weapons Offenses on Same Day
Traffic stops leads to weapons charges and other offenses

Riverside Police officers on Monday, March 3, 2014 made two separate arrests involving felony unlawful use of weapons. In the first case, the weapon that was recovered was reported stolen in a 2009 burglary in Maywood. On Monday, March 3, 2014 at 8:37 a.m., Riverside Police officers stopped a vehicle whose license plate registration was expired. The traffic stop took place at 26th and Des Planes. When the officer made contact with the driver, he was unable to produce a driver's license but stated he did have a valid license but did not have insurance. When running the driver's information, they found out that his license was, in fact, valid but he did not have vehicle insurance as he had stated to the officer. Additionally, the officer could smell cannabis from inside the vehicle. The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle at which time a bag which contained a green leafy substance fell onto the driver's seat of the vehicle. The driver made an attempt to recover the bag but was unsuccessful as he was stopped by the officer. The driver was placed under arrest for possession of cannabis and the traffic offenses. While preparing the car for an inventory search, the officer recovered a fully loaded .38 caliber Taurus handgun. The loaded firearm was lying loosely in the trunk and was loaded with five rounds. Also, officers found Vicodin under the driver's seat. The driver did not have the current prescription for the Vicodin and stated he was using it. Riverside Police charged Bryant F. Salmeron, 24 of the 4200 block of Prescott in Lyons with aggravated felony UUW, possession of a controlled substance, possession ammunition without a FOID card, possession of cannabis and related traffic offenses.

A second arrest occurred on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 4:02 p.m. In this case, an officer on patrol witnessed a tan Buick pass him where the driver was talking on his cell phone while driving. The vehicle was stopped at Harlem and Shenstone. When the officer asked the driver for his driver's license, he said he did not have one and gave false information. On the street, officers were unable to obtain whether the individual actually had a valid driver's license. At this point, he was arrested for driving without a valid Illinois license. While preparing the car for a tow, the arresting officer located a small handgun affixed to a rear pocket on the passenger front seat. The handgun recovered was a .25 caliber Tanfoglio Giuseppe, small semi-automatic handgun. The handgun was loaded with three rounds in the magazine. Once in police custody, the individual was fingerprinted and his identity was made known. Riverside Police arrested Robert L. Woolridge, 21, of the 5800 block of W. Lake Street in Chicago for aggravated felony UUW, and obstruction of justice. Mr. Woolridge was also charged with various traffic violations including driving while talking on his cell phone. At the time of his arrest, Mr. Woodridge was driving a tan 2003 Buick 4-door. In the weapons recovery incident involving the stolen gun out of Maywood, Riverside Police detectives contacted Maywood PD and turned all evidence over to them involving the theft of the handgun and the suspect in custody. Maywood PD is now following up with their victim on possible charges related to residential burglary. Both handguns were taken as evidence and sent to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab to have them tested against unsolved crimes in which a firearm was discharged.
