FOXMAN-UN

Network Management Solution for FOX515

ABBs FOXMAN-UN is a powerful
management system (NMS) for communica-
tion networks, equipped with FOX multi-
service multiplexers.
FOXMAN-UN is also capable to supervise
third-party equipment and present the
complete network topology as a dynamic
graphical display on the screen.
FOXMAN-UN Network Management Solution
FOXMAN-UN is a modular software
package. The package offers features and
options for the access and backbone network
up to STM-4 realized with FOX515. For
higher bandwidth requirements up to STM-64
complementing FOX-equipment and NMS
packages are available.
The graphical user interface (GUI) presents
the designed network on the top level. From
the overall view further displays can be
opened, showing the overall network down
to the equipment port level. Context-sensitive
menus and an on-line help system make
FOXMAN-UN easy to use.
Main advantages using the
ABB FOXMAN-UN Network
Management
!
Saves Time and Money
The GUI is the most important factor
for network management efficiency. At a
mouse click operators can call up newly
added or existing FOX515. Special inte-
grated masks allow accurate configuration
and updating.
Since the GUI is updated on-line it always
presents the latest status of the network,
wrong configurations are immediately
detected or even prevented from
becoming active by internal system checks.
Therefore, the operation and maintenance
team can efficiently manage the whole
network from a central point.
The FOXMAN-UN Networking Package
provides easy to use tools to enable the
operator to establish transmission paths in the
simplest possible way saving time and effort.
Operators can define criteria for alternative
routing within the network. Should the main
path fail, the defined protection path will be
automatically activated.
!
Integration of Teleprotection and
Telecommunication
With the growing demand on bandwidth,
the availability of fibres has become a
critical factor for utilities. Therefore,
network integration of telecommunication
and teleprotection is nowadays the
approach to use fibres more efficiently.
This results in a growing demand for
coordination between both applications.
FOXMAN-UN is the right tool to solve
these problems.
!
Clear View even of Complex
Networks
Using the straightforward GUI, the
operator is given the power to define a
hierarchical representation of the whole
communication network, multi-view maps,
and network partitions as required. The
operator can move easily by point-and-
click, observe and manage each element
across the entire assigned domain. This
graphical network representation can be
used as a central point of information
to get a complete network overview, to
deposit notes for other operators, and to
create annotations for specific network
elements.
!
Keeping an Eye on the Network
FOXMAN-UN makes it easy for the
operator to watch over the overall network
by monitoring not only performance but
also subscriber line status, sending alarms
in case of network problems, and initiate
test loops if required. Fault finding and
trouble-shooting is much faster having a
constantly updated overview of the whole
system and at the same time being able to
look at detailed alarm and configuration
data with a few mouse clicks.
Having an ABB FOXMAN-UN Network
Management, the overall performance
of your network is improved. In critical
situations your staff can react efficiently
within seconds. This means real increase in
network availability.
Networking package
Service providers require the
integration of operation,
engineering and customer
care. They also require an
End-to-End configuration
view and control of the
telecom domains such as
transport, switching for Voice, Data, and Ethernet services.
The Networking Package provides a database of trails as cur-
rently configured in the network, greatly speeds up the con-
figuration of new trails, and prevents incomplete or faulty trail
configurations.
This will lead to reduced cost of operations and shortened time
to delivery bandwidth to the end-customer.
Performance Management
Performance management
supervises the quality of
transmission of FOX515. If
predefined threshold levels
are exceeded, alarms will be
activated. This facilitates the
task of the network opera-
tor to provide a high service
quality to the subscriber and to constantly supervise it. As a rule,
the performance data in the Network Elements are measured and
calculated according to the ITU-T G.826 standard.
Graphical Network
Management
FOXMAN-UN supports a
graphical and hierarchical repre-
sentation of the network. There
are no limits on the number of
hierarchical levels. The operator
is free in selecting any number
of customer-specific background
bitmaps.
Security Management
The FOXMAN-UN security
management ensures that
unauthorized persons do
not have access to data and
functions of the system.
FOXMAN-UN provides
configurable, fine grained
access control features for
the individual user accounts.
FOXMAN-UN supports also the Network Partitioning func-
tion. FOX515 network can be segmented into several indepen-
dent partitions; the access to each partition is restricted to a
defined group of operators.
With the increased use of internal telecommunications facilities in util
Configuration Management
FOXMAN-UN discovers automati-
cally FOX515 Network Elements
that are inserted newly into
network. At the same time

ting tables, interface parameters,

database and can be displaye

utilities, efcient and exible management tools have become crucial
Fault Management
The Fault Management
capabilities of FOXMAN-
UN reduce the effects of
errors on the service quality
by means of functions for
alarming, error retrieval, and
testing.
The alarms in all FOX515 systems are continuously supervised
to detect changes on alarm states (e.g. loss of signal, loss of syn-
chronization, loss of frame, etc.). FOXMAN-UN supports five
different alarm severity levels according to the TMN standards;
the operator can change the severity of individual alarms.
Network elements and sections are displayed according to
their alarm state in different colours. If an alarm is detected,
the colour of the icon is changed. By clicking on the icon, the
operator can get more information about the alarms. Alarms can
be traced down to the smallest replaceable unit (e.g. card), and
further down to channel/subunit level.
Synchronization View
Synchronization of
network elements and
how the clock informa-
tion is propagated through the network determine the integrity
of information transmission through the network. To ensure
that this operates correctly, FOXMAN-UN provides the Syn-
chronization Map functionality.
The current synchronization timing source information is
collected from FOX515 Network Elements and shown as a
graphical diagram (Synchronization Map).
Foreign Object Alarm
Supervision
The FOXMAN-UN
offers also Foreign Element
Alarming, which allows to
manage radio or third-party
equipment with the same
management system. Foreign
elements can be displayed
and supervised.
FOX515 networks can also be configured
without direct connection to the systems.
Entire networks with FOX515 Network
Elements, their interconnections (sections,
paths), their geographical positions, all their
parameter settings and cross connection
tables, etc. can be prepared in order to be
downloaded to the FOX515 when the net-
works are installed.
Management of
Teleprotection System
Management of the FOX tele-
protection system is integrated
in the FOXMAN-UN. This
offers unique features ensuring
a highly secure teleprotection
function in an SDH network.
The FOXMAN-UN allows
to monitor and coordinate telecommunication as well as telepro-
tection at the same time.

FOXMAN-UN - A powerful Network Management System
!
Main Task
FOXMAN-UN is generally used for
network sizes above 10 network elements
(NE). It provides graphical network
displays with dynamically colored
communication links. Geographical
locations of equipment/stations and links
can be directly displayed using maps.
The Basic Package allows to manage each
NE in the whole network.
Together with the Networking
Package end-to-end configuration of
communication links and circuits can
easily be defined.
!
Management Functions: FCPS
Fault Management: Alarms and
status information from all NEs are
continuously collected and stored in log-
files. Depending on the severity of alarms
- Critical, Major, Minor, Warning - the
related NE icon on the display will change
its color dynamically; the same will
occur with the interconnecting link with
neighboring stations/icons if affected.
Configuration Management: NEs can
be fully configured and re-configured if
operator has required access permissions.
Performance Management: Complying to
ITU-T G.826
Security Above All: FOXMAN-UNs
strict access control protects against
unauthorized access, allowing
administrators to define access rights
for each operator to different levels of
control. FOXMAN-UN provides several
consistency checks to safeguard against
inadvertent operator errors and ensure
that every network intervention and its
source is documented (logged).
!
Distributed Architecture
FOXMAN-UN is based on a client
server architecture, suitable for multiple
independent, concurrent working places.
Each working place allows to individually
assign access rights for different levels of
operators.
Network views on different places may
be limited to certain region(s) or to certain
communication levels, e.g. access level,
transport level.
To increase the availability of the whole
Management System, a second system can
be installed as standby. Main and standby
units can be operated at the same site or
on geographically separated locations, if
required even as hot standby solution.
!
Higher Level Management Interface
Installed in a heterogeneous network with
different element management systems,
FOXMAN-UN supports standard SNMP
(Simple Network Management Protocol)
north-bound to connect to higher level
management systems.
3rd party equipment can be integrated
into FOXMAN-UN either connecting
hardware contacts to a local FOX or via
south-bound SNMP interface of FOX-
MAN-UN. These NEs from 3rd party
suppliers can then be graphically presented
on the network display of FOXMAN-UN
and supervised.
NOTE:
Each communication equipment counts as
one network Element (NE).
