Halliburton
the wider range of oil field services such as exploration, drilling, design, and engineering
Halliburton Company is the largest cementing and stimulation service company and is also a major
participant in drilling fluids. M-I SWACO, another major drilling fluids company, is jointly owned by
Schlumberger and Smith Industries, both leading players in the oil field services sector; Schlumberger is
also a major player in cementing/stimulation services. Baker Hughes is active in drilling chemicals
through Baker Hughes Drilling Fluids and in production chemicals through Baker Petrolite

Three of these service companies participate in more than one segment. Baker Hughes Drilling
Fluids and Baker Petrolite are both owned by Baker Hughes Inc. Halliburton is the leading
company in the cementing and stimulation segment in North America and has became a major
participant in the drilling fluids segment following its merger with Dresser Industries, which
owned the Baroid Corporation
2) Competitor Mapping
In the drilling service sector, Halliburton and M-I SWACO operate their own barite and bentonite
mines. This vertical integration gives them an advantage in some world areas. However, they
generally purchase all other chemicals. The other major drilling service company, Baker Hughes
Drilling Fluids, can purchase much of its chemical requirement from its Baker Petrolite affiliate
Of the cementing/stimulation service companies, Halliburton and Schlumberger purchase
component materials from chemical manufacturers and are not integrated back to any chemical
raw materials. BJ Services, which has a separate chemical services division that includes a
regional U.S. production chemical service company, manufactures many of their specialty
additives in-house.
3) Marketing
Although there are significant differences between the different market sectors, all three
require a very high level of technical and field support. All companies are involved in delivering
field service to oil companies with the delivery of chemicals in many cases being primarily
associated with-how-this service is paid for. A large part of the business in all three sectors is
delivered through long term contracts (sometimes over five years). These contracts will not
usually involve any volume guarantees but will involve opportunities for price escalation where
costs increase. A typical contract would involve one company supplying all the drilling fluid or
another company supplying all the production chemicals for a field or group of fields. Although
the company representative managing such a contract may be described as a field sales
engineer or an account manager, the skills required are more closely associated with those of a
technical project manager than those of a sales engineer.
