Workers compensation insurance covers employees medical expenses and lost wages if they are
hurt on the job. Premiums are based on the employers total payroll. Unemployment insurance
provides financial aid to persons in the event that they involuntarily become unemployed. The
federal unemployment tax (FUTA) rate is 6.2 percent of taxable wages. The taxable wage base is
the first $7,000 paid in wages to each employee during the year. Employers who pay the state
