Tutorial On Load Frequency Control

This document contains 9 problems related to load frequency control involving the parallel operation of two synchronous generators. The problems involve calculating the load sharing between generators given their ratings and droop characteristics, as well as determining the operating frequency and power flows under different load conditions. Solutions to each problem are provided.

Tutorial-2: Load Frequency Control

1. Two alternators of ratings 500 MW and 200 MW are feeding a system. The frequency is
50 Hz and each alternator is operating at half load. The system load increases by 140
MW and as a result of it the frequency drops to 49.5 Hz. What should be the value of
regulation constants in Hz/MW for each unit if it is desired that the two alternators should
share the load in proportion to their ratings?
(Ans: 0.005 Hz/ MW and 0.0125 Hz/MW)
2. The speed of 100 MW alternator drops by 4% from no-load to full load.
a) Find the regulation R in Hz per MW and Hz per unit MW of alternator.
b) If frequency drops by 0.1 Hz, find the change in power output.
(Ans: 0.02 Hz/ MW, 2 Hz/ pu MW and 5 MW)
3. Two alternators of ratings 300 MW and 400 MW are operating in parallel. The droop
characteristics of their governors are 4% and 5% respectively from no load to full load.
Assuming `that they are operating at 50 Hz at no load, how would they share a load of
600 MW and what will be the frequency at this load.
(Ans: 48.06 Hz)
4. Two alternators of ratings 300 MW and 400 MW are operating in parallel. The droop
characteristics of their governors are 4% and 6% respectively from no load to full load.
The speed changes are set so that a load of 400 MW is shared among the generators at 50
Hz in the ratio of their ratings. What are the no load frequencies of the generators?
(Ans: 51.17 Hz and 51.74 Hz)
5. Two identical 2 MVA alternators operate in parallel. The governor of first machine is
such that the frequency drops uniformly from 50 Hz on no-load to 47.5 Hz on full-load.
The corresponding uniform speed drop of the second machine is 50 Hz to 48 Hz. How
will they share a load of 3 MW?
(Ans: 1.333 MW, 1.667 MW)
6. The following two synchronous machines are operating in parallel
Machine A: 50 MW, 6% speed regulation
Machine B: 50 MW, 3% speed regulation
i.
Determine the load taken by each machine for a total load of 80 MW when the
speed changes are set to give rated speed at 100% rated output.
(Ans: 43.333 MW, 36.667 MW)
ii.
The speed changer of machine A is so adjusted that 80 MW is equally shared.
Find the output of machine A for the rated speed and also its percentage speed at
no-load.
(Ans: 45 MW, 105.4%)

7. Two synchronous generators are supplying a common load. Generator 1 has no-load
frequency of 51.5 Hz and regulation of 1 MW/Hz. Generator 2 has no-load frequency of
51 Hz and regulation of 1 MW/Hz. The total load is 2.5 MW at 0.8 lagging.
i.
At what frequency, are the generators supplying this load and how much power is
supplied by each generator?
(Ans: 1.5 MW, 1.0 MW)
ii.
An additional load of 1 MW is attached to this system. What will be the new
frequency?
(Ans: 49.5 Hz)
iii.
How much is governor set point (frequency in Hz) of generator 2 to be adjusted to
bring the system frequency at 50 Hz for 3.5 MW system load?
(Ans: 52 Hz)
8. Two power plants A and B are interconnected by a lossless line. Capacity of A is 200
MW and that of B is 100 MW. Their speed regulations from no load to full load are 1.5%
and 3% respectively. The load on bus of each station is 100 MW. Find the generation at
each plant and transfer of power through line.

(Ans: 160 MW, 40 MW, 60 MW)

9. Two 50 Hz power plants A and B are interconnected by a lossless line. Capacity of A is

15 MW and that of B is 4 MW. Their speed regulations from no load to full load are 3%
and 4% respectively. The load on busbar of plant B is 4 MW and that on A is 10 MW.
Find generated output of each station, power transmitted by interconnecting line and
operating frequency. Assume free governor action and no load frequency of 50 Hz at
both stations.

(Ans: 11.67 MW, 2.33 MW, 1.67 MW and 48.833 Hz)
