An Internship at Kurla EMU Carshed

(From 12/11/2014 to 24/11/2014)
SECTIONS IN CARSHED:
1. Pantograph section
2. Auxiliary Section
3. Control equipment
4. Braking Section
5. Heavy repair
6. A.W.S.
7. I.C. section
8. Carpentry
9. Welding
10. C&M lab
11. AC DC &EMU commissioning
12. Light and fan section
13. Unscheduled and others
Section 1, 2,3,4,6 are major sections that we have learnt. As this section are of our
interest being Electrical Engineering Student.
PANTOGRAPH SECTION:
A pantograph (or pan) is mounted on the roof of a train to collect power through
contact with an overhead wire. It is a current collector. Typically, a single wire is used,
with the return current running through the track.
AUXILIARY SECTION:

3 phase squirrel cage

CONTROL EQUIPMENT:
1. Governor:
Maintains pressure by setting and tripping.
(4.0 to 4.5) and (6.8 to 7.8).

2. Change over switch:

Mechanical switch that acts on pressure changes. It switches between AC and
DC. It is control by Voltage Sensing Device (VSD).

3. Voltage sensing device:

Senses that coming from overhead supply line is ac or dc via pantograph and
sends accordingly through different devices (AC---> Vacuum circuit breaker and
DC---> High speed circuit breaker)

4. Master controller:
It uses the 32 bits Microprocessor to control various electrical module.

6. VCB:

BRAKING:
Types of braking:
1. Electro-Pneumatic (EP): for normal braking.
2. Auto brake: applied when EP brakes are not working, or battery fault (less charge
etc.)
3. Emergency: applied when both EP and auto brakes fails. Train stops within 4-5
seconds.
4. Dead man's handle:
5. AWS: In this Emergency brakes are applied whenever AWS system is triggered.
6. Guard Emergency: Control by Guard in case of emergency (like accident)
instead of wasting time to contact the Driver and ask him to stop.
7. Parking Brakes: To prevent the train from rolling out on slopes. Normally applied
when train standing, and they are release in running condition.
