TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

ELECTRICAL

1. GENERAL

The Contractor shall apply and install the complete installation for the electrical supply
and control of all items of equipment in this Contract except that supply terminated
with isolator will be brought to the switchboards and control panels by others. The
Contractor shall supply all necessary terminals, isolator and cabling to all air-
conditioning units.

All motors shall be wired complete with isolating switches, thermal over-loads,
starters, etc. and shall be of identical make except where approval is given for special
purpose motors.

Wiring throughout shall be in accordance with the I.E.E. wiring rules and latest
amendments thereto and with any requirements of the local supply authority only
licensed and approved Electrical Contractors shall be employed.

Conduits shall be screwed galvanised throughout, unless otherwise approved and shall
not be less than in diameter. All conduit used on the works shall be new, free from
burrs and rough edges and shall be kept dry at all times. Inspection type fittings may be
used where necessary to facilitate the drawings in of conductors. All conduit work is to
be completed and inspected by the Engineer before wiring is commenced. Where
flexible conduit is necessary for any connection an approved type of conduit may be
used. Exposed wiring will not be permitted.

All wiring shall be carried out in g.i. concealed conduit, looped and shall not contain
joints except where connections are made at numbered terminal strips on the
equipment. Standard colouring of conductors shall be used throughout the installation
and where necessary the colouring shall be indicated on the air-conditioning diagram.

An earth wire shall be run to each motor frame and control panel and all the equipment
shall be earthed as required by the wiring rules. In no case shall the earth wire be less
than 7/.029 ins. and it shall be terminated in an approved manner.

The Contractor shall submit layouts and details of the proposed electrical installation to
the Engineer for approval in all cases before work begins.

2. SUPPLY

Electricity supply for the air-conditioning installation shall be 230 V, 50 cycles, single
phase, 3-wire and shall be provided by Electrical Sub-Contractor at the positions as
shown in the drawings.

3. LOCAL CONTROL PANELS

Control Panel for air cooled split unit shall be located adjacent to each of the
equipment.

Each control panel shall have a combination double-pole of a suitable rating, starter of
suitable type and rating, start-stop push buttons, indicating lamps, etc.

4. MATERIALS

4.1 Fuse Switch Units

Fuse switches shall be of 500 V rating and steel plate casing. Fuse switches shall be of
triple pole and neutral link or single pole and neutral link as shown on the drawings.
They shall be capable to operate continuously at their full current rating within
prescribed temperature rise limits and shall have a parallel quick make and quick break
mechanism. Switches shall be supplied with HRC fuses and bolted type neutral link
and complete with phase barrier. Front access door shall be detachable type, fitted with
dust gaskets and mechanically interlocked to prevent opening when the switch is ON.
All fuse switch units shall comply to B.S. 3185 and where applicable B.S. 861 and B.S.
2510.

4.2 Contactors

Contactors shall be of climate proof, non-sticking, chatter free type operating without
discernible noises. Contactors shall comprise (i) the fixed contact assembly mounted on
steel base plate and (ii) a withdrawable unit containing magnet, coil, armature and
moving contract assembly. The contacts shall be located centrally to ensure balanced
operation and equalised pressure while making fast pick-up and drop-out.

The coil shall be encapsulated, double wound type, rated continuously at 240V.
Contactors shall be manufactured in accordance with B.S. 775 for Class II Category
A4.

4.3 Thermal Overload Relays

Triple pole, manual reset type, adjustable within the range +15% nominal setting and
manufactured in accordance with B.S. 587. D.O.L. relays shall be compensated so that
their operation is sensitive to current only and is independent of ambient temperature.
D.O.L. relays shall include an out of balance feature causing them to trip if the current
in any phase is more than 15% different from that in other phases. Thermistors shall be
used for chiller motors.

4.4 Rotary Control Selector Switches

Rotary control selector switches shall be of the multi-cell type, suitable for frequent
operation at a continuous rating of 5A. 500V contacts. The contacts shall be high
conductivity silver faced copper. The contact chamber shall be so arranged that stops
can be fitted to restrict the handle movement to one, two or three positions. Rotary
control selector switches shall of the square operator type.

4.5 Push-Button Control Switches

Push button control switches shall be installed complete with contactor blocks and
operators. All operators shall be of the spring return momentary type. Push button,
control switches shall be suitable for panel mounting and rated continuously at 5A.
500V. Push buttons shall be labelled with white engraved letters according to its
operation.

4.6 Indicating Lights

250V type with M.B.C. holders and clear lamps, complete with coloured domed bezel.
Body shall be adequately ventilated for heat dissipation and be fitted with screw
terminals for the connections of wiring. Solder lug terminals will be accepted. Lamps
shall be readily changeable from the front. Indicating lamps with applied paint will not
be accepted.

4.7 Auxiliary Relays

Auxiliary relays shall be of 250V 5A rating with silver contacts and enclosed in clear
perspex duct covers. These relays can be added to the main contacts at any time
without disturbing the main contactors.

4.8 Terminal Blocks

Moulded insulated type with barriers between terminals and screwed terminals. Provide
separate terminal for each wire terminating on the control panel.

4.9 Ammeters

4 ins. square, flush pattern complying with B.S.S. 89 for first grade accuracy being
dead beat and with an open scale at least 5 ins. long, suitable for indicating motor
running currents (voltmeters similar). Where necessary fit transformers to B.S. 81.

4.10 Motors

Motors used throughout the installation shall preferably be of the same manufacture.
Motors selected be suitable for the duty required and shall be silent in operation.
Motors of h.p. and above shall be 415 volt 3 phase 50 cycles supply. Motors of less
than h.p. shall be wound for 230 volts 1 phase 50 cycles. All motors shall be of
squirrel cage induction type with Class E insulation to B.S. 2757. Terminal boxes
shall be suitable for reception of screwed conduit and P.V.C. cables. All motors shall
be manufactured to prevent the ingress of moisture and in accordance with B.S. 1156
and B.S. 170 and rated for continuous duty.

5. WIRING

Carry out all necessary electrical wiring for power and control circuits to ensure
complete and satisfactory operation of the services.

5.1 P.V.C. Cables and M.I.C.C. Cables

P.V.C. submains shall be in conduit and multi-cable runs in trunking. P.V.C. cables of
appropriate grade and rating manufactured in compliance with the relevant British
Standards shall be installed giving consideration to the conduit or trunking sizes. A
space factor of 45% shall be allowed in all instances.

All cables shall terminate in approved glands, special care being taken to prevent
ingress of moisture. This work must be carried by skilled tradesmen using tools
recommended by the manufacturer. Cable ends shall be properly sealed during storage
prior to installation.

Cables shall be 660V grade single core cables of appropriate rating and shall be colour
coded throughout using red, yellow and blue for phase wires and black for neutral.

CONDUIT

Conduit and fittings shall be Class B steel screwed conduit throughout and of
adequate size to permit the drawing in or removal of one conductor while all others are
in place. Use no conduit smaller than without specific approval from the Engineer.

Flexible conduit may be used for connection to items of equipment or as directed. Such
conduits shall be approved P.V.C. sheathed type terminated with suitable brass glands.

Provide draw-in boxes as required to facilitate drawing-in cables using tees in lieu of
bends or elbows and junction boxes in lieu of tees. Surface conduit shall be fixed by
means of spacer bar saddled only. Provision shall be made to drain condensed
moisture. Exposed conduit shall be plugged effectively against the ingress of moisture
and dirt until wiring is drawn. At termination and joints a coat of anti-rust paint shall be
applied and on completion of the installation, exposed conduits shall be painted with
two coats of paint to the approval of the Engineer.

CABLE TRUNKINGS AND TRAYS

Where necessary for ease of wiring and for cable runs in excess of the permissible
cable capacity for conduits, cables shall be grouped in cable trunkings or trays.

Cable trunkings shall be manufactured from galvanised mild sheet steel of not less than
18 swg for sizes up to 4 by 4 and not less than 16 swg for sizes up to 6 by 6.

Cable trays shall be manufacture from galvanised mild sheet steel of not less than 18
swg and shall be adequately spaced to allow free air movement.

Cable trunkings and trays shall be treated with an each type rust inhibitor and painted
in two coats of finishing enamel to the approval of the Engineer.

Trunking and trays shall be supported at maximum 6 0 regular intervals or to suit


the equipment supplied from mild steel brackets galvanised after fabrication. Trunking
and tray runs shall be erected complete before any cable is drawn in and the number of
cables installed shall be in such that a space factor of 45% is not exceeded.

Earth continuity shall be provided across all joints by means of external copper
bonding links supplied for this purpose.

GENERAL

All conduits, ducts and trays exposed to view shall be installed truly parallel to building
members and packed out from surfaces to give truly straight lines.

Actual location of connections to machines shall be finally determined to suit the


equipment offered.

6. ISOLATING SWITCHES

Supply and install approved metal-clad isolating switches adjacent to all motors as
required to interrupt the conductors feeding the motor.

Isolating switches shall be heavy duty types capable of interrupting full load motor
current.

7. MOTOR STARTERS

All motors install shall be provided with starters to B.S. 587 and B.S. 4070 complete
with overload, single phasing and under voltage protection.

The starters installed shall be automatic i.e. with stop/start push buttons and for
manual/ automatic operation as required. Starters shall be suitable for 415V, 3 phase 50
c/s supply. The starters supplied shall be as follows :-
Spec E/5
1. Up to 3 H.P. direct to line (D.O.L.)

2. Above 3 H.P. and up star/delta or auto-transformer


to 10 H.P.

3. Above 10 H.P. auto-transformer, resistance starter or any


appropriate starter to limit starting current to
1.6 times full load current.

DIRECT ON-LINE STARTERS

Direct on-line starters shall include but not restricted to :-

1. Isolating ON/Off switch.

2. HRC fuses of appropriate rating.

3. Contactor (block type) complete with auxiliary contactors for indication and
suitable for maximum 600 operations/hr.

4. Thermal overload relay, complete with external reset.

5. Indicating lights.

For single phase circuits single phasing relay may be deleted.

STAR-DELTA STARTER

Star-delta starters shall include but not restricted to :-

1. Isolating ON/Off switch.

2. HRC fuses of appropriate rating.

3. Two sets of contactors complete with auxiliary contactors for indication. The
main contactor shall be in the delta loop and suitable for 600 operations/hr.

4. Thermal overload relay, complete with external reset.

5. Indicating lights.

OTHER STARTERS

For auto-transformer, resistance and any other starters specification details of these
shall be included in the offer for approval by the Engineer.

8. POWER FACTOR CORRECTION

Capacitors for power correction to 0.85 lagging or better shall be installed for every
motor over 5 H.P.

9. DIAGRAMS

Submit to the Consulting Engineers for approval before commencing work, the
following details in triplicate :-

1. Plan showing the General Arrangement and Construction details of Air-


Conditioning Local Control Switchboards.

2. Wiring diagram of the Air-Conditioning Local Control Switchboards.

3. Schematic wiring diagrams of the complete systems including sequence control


diagrams.

The Consulting Engineer will check the above diagrams and return one copy when
approved to the Contractor.

10. EARTHING

EARTHING shall be carried to the requirements of the specification and other or all
requirements of the T.N.B. Provide suitable earth leakage protection where required by
the supply authority.

All power outlets, motors and accessories shall have an earthing conductor. A separate
earthing shall be provided from the switchboard or distribution board for earth and
every circuit. Sub-circuit earthing conductors shall be not less than 7/.029 (green OVC
sheathed) and sub-main earthing conductors shall be not less than 7/.044 (green PVC
sheathed).
