Boltscanactintwoways,namelyintensionandshear.Theindividualpartsofaboltcompriseahexagonalhead
andacircularsectionshank,whichmaybefullyorpartlythreaded.Theycomeinshankdiametersfromvery
small(6mm)upto36mm.Largerdiametersmaybeavailabletospecialorder.
Twogradesofboltarecommonlyused.Thesearegrade4.6and8.8.Thefirstdigitrelatestotheultimate
strengthofthematerial,whilstthesecondistheratioofyieldstresstoultimatestrength.Thusgrade4.6bolts
haveanultimatematerialstrengthof400N/mm2andtheuield(orproof)stressis60%oftheultimatestrength.
Simlarlygrade8.8boltshaveanultgimatestrengthof800N/mm2andaratioofyield/proofstresstoultimate
strengthof80%.Simplegrade4.6boltswithoutcorrosionprotectionarecommonlycalled'black'bolts'
