The FIVA valve which drives the actuator for each individual exhaust valve has two positions, open or closed. When it is
opened by a signal from the cylinder control unit, the hydraulic oil is forced in and pushes the pistons upwards, thus
opening the engines exhaust valve.
The pressure is permanently maintained until the FIVA valve is activated to allow the oil underneath the actuator piston to
drain. The exhaust valve is returned to the closed position by the air spring and the actuator piston returns back to the
lower position.
The opening and closing of the exhaust valve is variable for efficient operation across the whole operating range of the
engine.
Manual adjustment of the exhaust valve timing allows up to 2 of retardation on opening (to adjust for fuel combustion
and turbocharger efficiency) and 2 advance or retardation on closing (to adjust compression ratio).
