Solved Problems To Chapter 14

This document contains two solved problems related to DC motor speed control: 1) A DC motor is speed controlled below base speed using a chopper. The speed range is calculated as 0 to 2050 rpm, and the duty cycle range is 3/44 to 1. 2) A DC motor fed from a three-phase converter has a rated speed of 1800 rpm. The line voltage into the converter is calculated as 326V for a delay angle of 0 degrees. The firing angle range to control speed from 1800 rpm to 900 rpm is calculated as 0 to 57.71 degrees.

Solved Problems

14.1 The speed of a separately excited d.c. motor is controlled below base-speed by type-A chopper.
The supply voltage is 220 V dc. The armature circuit has Ra = 0.5 W and La = 10 mH. The motor
constant is Kv = 0.1 V/rpm. Motor drives a constant torque load requiring an average armature
current of 30 A. On the assumption of continuous armature current, determine:
(a) range of speed control and
(b) range of duty cycle.
Sol. Motor terminal voltage,
Et = Eo = Ea + Ia . Ra.
Minimum possible speed of d.c. motor is zero. This gives motor counter emf, Eq = 0.
\ a Es = Eo = o + Ia . Ra.
a 220 = 0 + 30 0.5 = 15 V
15
\ a= = 3/44.
220
Maximum possible value of duty cycle is 1.
\ a Es = Ea + Ia . Ra.
1 220 = kV. N + 30 0.5.
220 15
\ N= = 2050 rpm.
0.10
Therefore
(a) range of speed control is O < N < 2050 rpm and
3
(b) range of duty cycle, <a<1
44
14.2 A separated excited d.c. motor is fed from three phase six-pulse fully controlled bridge
converter. The motor develops its full-load torque at a rated speed of 1800 rpm taking a rated
current of 60 A at 440 V. The input to three-phase converter is from an ideal source of 50 Hz.
(a) Determine the rms value of line voltages input to the converter if motor runs at its rated
conditions for delay angle a = 0.
(b) What is the range of firing angles for a speed control of 1800 rpm to 900 rpm? The armature
resistance is 0.5 ohm.
Solution Manual 2

3 2E
Sol. (a) We have, Edca = cos a
p
At a = 0, Edca = 440 V
3 2E
\ 440 = \ E = 326 V.
p
(b) Back emf of motor at rated condition,
Eb1 = 440 60 0.5 = 410 V = K 1800
Back emf at 900 rpm = Eb2 = K 900
Eb2 K 900
Or = = 1/2 or
410 K 1800
410
Eb2 = = 205 V.
2
Hence of 900 rpm,
Edca = Eb2 + Ia . Ra = 205 + 60 0.5
= 235
\ Hence, 235 = 1.35 326 cos a
cos a = 235/1.35 326 = 0.534
= cos 57.71
\ a = 57.71.
\ Range of firing delay angle is
q a 57.710
