Certification Information
FCC Information
Electronic test equipment is exempt from Part 15 compliance (FCC)
in the United States, but EXFO makes reasonable efforts to ensure this
compliance.
CE Information
Electronic test equipment is subject to the EMC Directive in the European
Union. The EN61326 standard prescribes both emission and immunity
requirements for laboratory, measurement, and control equipment. This
unit has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital
device. Please refer to the Declaration of Conformity, page xiv.
Independent Laboratory Testing
This unit has undergone extensive testing according to the European
Community Directive and Standards. All pre-qualification tests were
performed internally, at EXFO, while all final tests were performed
externally, at an independent, accredited laboratory. This guarantees the
unerring objectivity and authoritative compliance of all test results.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Sensitive
Equipment
Plug-in modules can be damaged by static electrical discharge. To
minimize the risk of damage, dissipate static electricity by touching a
grounded unpainted metal object:
before removing, inserting or handling the Packet Blazer module.
before connecting or disconnecting Ethernet/optical cables to/from the
Packet Blazer.

Use of controls, adjustments, and procedures for operation and
maintenance other than those specified herein may result in hazardous
radiation exposure.
WARNING
Use of optical instruments with this product will increase eye hazard.
WARNING
When the LASER LED is on or flashing, the Gigabit Ethernet module is
receiving/emitting an optical signal.
CAUTION
Do not remove or insert a module when the FTB-400 is turned on.
To insert a test module into a two-slot FTB-400
1. Turn off (cold shutdown) the FTB-400. Refer to the FTB-400 user guide
for more information.
2. Position the FTB-400 so that the right panel is facing you.
3. Take the module and place it so that the identification sticker is on the
left side of the module.
4. Insert the top and bottom protruding edges into the grooves of the
module slot.
5. Push the module all the way to the back of the slot. The module will
stop when it makes contact with the retaining screw.
6. Place the FTB-400 so that the left panel is facing you.
7. While applying slight pressure to the module, turn the retaining screw
clockwise until it is tight. This will secure the module into its seated
position.
When the FTB-400 is turned on, the startup sequence will automatically
detect the module.
CAUTION
Do not remove or insert a module when the FTB-400 is turned on.
To insert a test module into a seven-slot FTB-400

down. The connector pins should be at the back of the module, on the
left side, and the retaining screw hole right beside it.
CAUTION
Inserting a module upside down could result in permanent damage to
the module, as the connector pins might be bent.
4. Insert the protruding edges into the grooves of the module slot.
To remove a test module,
1. Turn off (cold shutdown) the FTB-400. Refer to the FTB-400 user guide
for more information.
2. Position the FTB-400 so that the left panel is facing you.
3. Turn the retaining screw counterclockwise until it stops. The module
will slowly be released from the slot.
CAUTION
Pulling out a test module by the connector could seriously damage both
the module and connector.

Management operation.
1 The default PVID value used for classifying frames on ingress
through a Bridge Port. The PVID value can be changed by
management on a per-Port basis.
4095 Reserved for implementation use. This VID value shall not be
configured as a PVID, configured in any Filtering Database
entry, used in any Management operation, or transmitted in a
tag header.
Test Procedure
Note: The Test Procedure window is displayed when the test configuration
analyzer is set to Performance Analyzer.
Select the tests that have to be performed once the test is created.
Tests that are enabled will be performed following this order: Throughput,
Back-to-Back, Frame Loss, then Latency.
Throughput
The objective of this test is to find the throughput of the device under test
for which there is no frame loss. Starting at full media speed, converge
towards real throughput measurement with the test having a predefined
duration (Test Time). The search is done with a basic halving/doubling
method until a final value is reached. The test performs the number of trials
defined (Nb of trials to average). The Accuracy and Nb of acceptable errors
settings specify how precise that result must be. At the end, the results are
validated the number of times specified (Number of validation). The test is
performed for each frame size defined.
Back-to-Back
The objective of this test is to find the maximum number of frames that
can be sent at maximum throughput. Sending a burst of frames (Max time
worth of frames) with minimum inter-frame gaps to the device under test
and counting the number of frames forwarded. If the count of transmitted
frames is equal to the number of frames forwarded the length of the burst
is increased and the test is rerun. If the number of forwarded frames is
less than the number transmitted, the length of the burst is reduced and
the test is rerun. The back-to-back value is the number of frames in the
longest burst that the DUT will handle without the loss of any frames. The
test performs the number of trials defined (Nb of trials to average). The
Accuracy and Nb of acceptable errors settings specify how precise that
result must be. The test is performed for each frame size defined.
Frame Loss
The objective of this test is to find the percentage of frames that are lost due
to lack of resources. Starting at full media speed, the test is performed for
a specific frame size and for the specified duration (Test Time). The test is
repeated by decreasing the throughput by the granularity (Test granularity)
specified, then the test is repeated again and again until there are two
successive trials in which no frames are lost. The test performs the number
of trials defined (Nb of trials to average). The Nb of acceptable errors
setting specifies how precise that result must be. At the end, the results are
validated the number of times specified (Final result validation). The test is
performed for each frame size defined.
Latency
The objective of this test is to find the time required for the sent frame to
go through the device under test and return to the FTB-8510. Starting by
sending a stream of frames for the predefined duration (Test Time) and
throughput (% Util.) at a particular frame size (Frame Size), an identifying
dependent tag is included in one frame. The time at which this frame is
fully transmitted is recorded (timestamp A). When the tagged frames come
back the time is recorded again (timestamp B) and the Latency result is:
timestamp B - timestamp A. The test is repeated for the number of times
defined (Nb of trials to average) and the average result is calculated. The
test is performed for each frame size defined.
Note: Please note with dual test sets configuration, the Latency measurement
is a round trip delay calculation. The
remote test set will return the received
frames to the local test set. The local will
then calculate the Latency as described
above (timestamp B Timestamp A)
subtracting the processing time of the
remote test set.

Framing
Choices are:
For optical interface: Unframed, Unframed (Sync. Mode), Framed
Layer 1 and Framed Layer 2.
For electrical interface: Framed Layer 1 and Framed Layer 2 (Gig-
E only).
Unframed: consists of sending a frame without end of frame.
This type of frame is only used for Loop back configuration of
a single port. It is not possible to use multiple ports with this
frame format.
Unframed (Sync. Mode): consists of sending a very long
frame that lasts approximately 1 sec. Thus, sending preambles
regularly keeps the link alive.
Framed Layer 1: consists of sending a frame of 1500 bytes
(1518 Gig-E only). This framing type allows the connection to
any interface that complies to 802.3 Ethernet PHY or DWDM
fibre.
Framed Layer 2 (Electrical Gig-E only): consists of sending a
frame of 1518 bytes. This framing type allows the connection
to any interface that complies to 802.3 Ethernet Layer 2 (valid
MAC address, length and FCS bytes).
Default is Framed Layer 1.
Coupled TX/RX
Coupled allows coupling both the TX and RX signal with the same
