The document discusses solving structural analysis problems using the flexibility method for frames, beams, and trusses under different support conditions and loads.

The flexibility method is used to analyze the frames and beams under various support conditions like pin, roller, and fixed supports. Reactions, member forces, and deflections are calculated.

The problems consider supports like pin, roller and fixed supports. Loads include uniformly distributed loads, concentrated loads, and lateral loads.

ASSIGNMENT 1
Answer all (three) questions.

1. Frame ABCD as shown in figure 1 is supported as pin at A and fix at D carries a uniformly
distributed load of 60 kN/m on beam BC and lateral load of 28 kN at node B. All members are
having the same material properties and relative cross-sectional properties as shown in the figure
(EI is constant). Using the flexibility method, determine:
(a) the end moment for each member,
(b) draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the frame by showing the importance
values.
Axial effect of each member is neglected.

2. Beam ABCD is supported by a roller at A and fixed at D, and has a hinge joint at B carries a
concentrated load of 80 kN at C as shown in figure 2. The beam has constant properties of the
modulus of elasticity, E of 200 kN/mm2 and moment of inertia, I of 2.8 x 107 mm4. By using the
flexibility method, determine:
(i) the deflection at B,
(ii) the reactions at support A and D, and
(iii) draw the diagrams of deflected shape, shear force and bending moment of the beam. Show
the importance values in the diagrams.

3. Figure 3 shows a truss MNP is supported by pin at nodes P and N and carries nodal forces of 75
kN and 46 kN at node M. The truss members have a relative cross-sectional area (A) as shown in
the figure and the axial rigidity (EA) is constant. By assuming the horizontal reaction at P as a
redundant, and using the flexibility method determine,
(a) the internal forces for all members.

(b) If the horizontal settlement of 3 mm occurs at node P, calculate the change of internal force
of member NP. Taking E as 45 kN/mm2 for all members and A is 850 mm2.
