Role in ONGC

 In modern processes, automation is essential, for control of flow, pressure

and temperature and many more parameters. Many measures are attained
for safety of equipment, fire prevention and automatic fire dousing. All
such controls are attained through instruments.
 Instrument Engineers, select correct instruments, maintain these,
caliberate and keep them fit.
 Constant supervision and maintenance of the Process control
systems,instruments etc,
 Role of inst engineer in oil rigs: Not on rigs but in labs that have so much of
instrumentation works related to oil and gas equipment. Jobs on rigs are
basically field jobs, an instrumentation engineer can be sent sent to rig (say
wellsite) for the purpose of some repair or troubleshooting but majorly one will
be working in yard or in the lab. In Oil & Gas there are so many different sub-
fields such as drilling, cementing, mud-logging and wireline logging.
 In drilling itself there has been a huge advance in last few years. A technology
called logging while drilling (LWD) is widely used across the world. In this, well-
logging is performed while the drilling is in process. So many instruments and
tools are involved for gathering and processing of this data. Most of the LWD
tools are memory based, once the drill string comes uphole, the data taken inside
the well can be analysed. Another technique called measurement while drilling
(MWD) is also in use these days. In this technology, the data is sent in the mud-
pulse form. However, as per my personal experience, MWD data gives only a
little idea about the formation, while LWD presents a better picture. So for an
instrumentation engineer, there will be opportunities with many drilling
companies like, Schlumberger, Trans-ocean, Baker Hughes, Halliburton and
many more. So if you are really interested in working at rig, as a field
professional, then a drilling rig can have lots of opportunities for you.

 Cementing is another process which is essential part of the oil wells. Cementing is
done once drilling and logging is complete. I know that lot of chemical and
hydraulic engineering knowledge is required for cementing operations. This is
because in the kind of cement that must be used, settling time and bonding with
the formation and casing, all these things are decided by cementing chemists. But
how the pumping is to be done and how much of cement must be pumped so that
cement is just in the right amount and other such related things are decided by
the cementing engineers who are mostly from mechanical background. The
equipment being used is mostly hydraulic with some automation control.
Cementing is a process in which I guess there are not many chances for an
instrument engineer but i won’t say there is absolutely no job for an
instrumentation person in it.
 Wireline logging and perforation is probably one of the most important part of oil
wells. And probably this is the field where your instrumentation knowledge will
be of maximum use. For wireline logging, a set of surface equipment is required
which is obviously very robust and reliable as well. Surface equipment talks with
the tools that go downhole with the help of an electromechanical cable. In this
whole process everything is related to instrumentation. The surface and sub-
surface all the items that are being used are wholly are partially electronic
instruments. For the maintenance and troubleshooting of these equipment a
good instrumentation engineer is always in requirement. Along with that a
person who has good knowledge of instruments can be sent to field for doing
those logging jobs so that in case of any failure, the tools can be repaired on
wellsite.
 The above jobs are very much related to the field in oil and gas. If you are really
looking forward to work in field then I’ll suggest the above fields are best suited
for you. However, in addition to above jobs, there is always a requirement in
refineries for the instrumentation engineers. But since your question was related
to Oil Rigs, I have confined myself to the field work which is mostly related to
upstream oil and gas work.

Instrumentation Engineer (Current Employee) – Mumbai, Maharashtra – May 4, 2016

As an instrumentation engineer, I have been involved with the design, development,
Document control ,assembly . I have deep understanding of Instrument installation, testing,
Inspection of field Instrument and calibration of field Instrument such (Transmitter , gauges ,
switches and valves).
I have also worked on HPU (Hydraulic Power Unit), SDP ( Shut Down Panel), HIPPS(High
Integrity Pressure Protection System), TUTA (Top side Umbilical Termination Assembly)
,and Solar Panels.
Apart from technical skills, I am also good at communication and management.
 As an instrumentation Engineer, learnt many things like pneumatics, from relay logic
to latest PLCs.
Preventive Maintenance is not being given much importance.
Being a maintenance engineer, at times of shutdown have to work for round the
clock both physically and mentally which is the hardest part and also the most
enjoyable part.

Q1. Kindly tell us about the work culture, environment and incentives of working at ONGC (both
onshore and offshore) and other Oil and Gas companies?

Ans: The work environment in ONGC is quite satisfactory. This place allows you to learn as much as you
want.

An instrumentation engineer is a key personal in offshore processing platform, plants, and refineries. In case of
offshore fields, all latest technologies are in place and very high level of instrumentation is used. On the first
day of joining you may dislike the company office and its interiors, as being a government organization, much
has not been done to make it appear swanky. But over the time you will start feeling very comfortable, when
you will learn about the organization. On almost all its locations, ONGC has huge campuses in the
cities, sprawling over hundreds of acres. They include all facilities like officer’s club, golf course, stadiums,
tennis/badminton courts, etc. The office locations are also very nice and accessible as compared to other oil
and gas companies.

The incentives of working in ONGC are really great. The starting package comes out to be 10-11 LPA as
CTC. Also, the medical facilities provided by ONGC are the best in all of India.

Q2. What is scope and career growth/path(in terms of position in company and pay scale) in ONGC and
other similar Oil and Gas Companies?

Ans: Career growth is stagnant in the early 10-15 years, where you will get time bound promotions only, but it
will differ when you rise further after that. After 3 promotions, you will get promotion on the basis of your
Performance Review(PAR). Sometimes PAR may be affected by your personal relation with your supervisor
but that happens in almost all the organizations. The Pay growth is not like that of private companies. You
will get a 3% increment in basic pay annually. After every 10 years, you can enjoy pay commission hikes
which are quite satisfactory. Although some may find private companies more rewarding in terms of career
growth and pay growth, but they come with a great amount of work lo.ad and tension too .

Q3 What all foreign opportunities (Job Profiles and/or Company Name) an ICE engineer should look
out for? Also mention career path which an ICE graduate should follow to shift to foreign roles?

Ans: Among foreign companies, one may look for Schlum, Helliburton, Shell, BP,and Middle East
Opportunities. These days, Instrumentation and Control is used everywhere, in almost all mega factories and
plants to make the systems automatic for production efficiency.

Q4. Please mention any specific course, certification, skill, field of knowledge which an NSITian should
explore while being in college (considering ICE has out – dated syllabus) which help in securing good
job profile right out of college.

Ans: Yes it is true that NSIT’s syllabus is very outdated. But engineers do need to learn the basics too which
get covered in NSIT’s syllabus. NSITians can work in projects which include instrumentation because they
will never get that time again with all those facilities. NSIT lab facilities were very much under- utilized in our
times. But I don’t know much about the present situation.
