Assignment 1

This document contains 13 assignments related to designing combined sewer systems, calculating storm runoff and time of concentration, sewer sizing, water quality parameters like BOD and COD, and culvert and drainage design. The assignments include calculating DWF and storm runoff from land use data, sizing sewers based on population and flow data, and water quality calculations involving BOD dilution and reduction in receiving waters. Standard wastewater characteristics and culvert/drainage design based on time of concentration are also included.

I Environmental Engineering - II (CE 1304)

1. A Combined sewerage system is to be designed for a drainage area of 20 hectares. The area has buildings @
25 houses/ hectares, each house having a roof area of 80 sq m and runoff coefficient of 0.95 and occupancy
rate of 10 persons/houses, in average. The area has 20% of it covered by roads having an imperviousness
factor of 0.6. The remaining area is open space with a runoff coefficient of 0.12. The time of concentration at
the inlet point of combined sewer, for the drainage area is 15 min. Calculate (i) the DWF and (ii) the storm
runoff from the area. Assume water supply @ 200 lpcd.
2. Drainage of strom water from two blocks A and B enter the main hole (MH) I and II respectively as shown in
the fig. Calculate (i) the time of concentration at MH I and MH II. (ii) the storm runoff at manhole at MH I
and MH II. Flow velocity in the conduit is 0.6 m/s and distance between manholes is 400 m.

3. Find the design discharge for combined sewer for following data: P=30000; Area = 20,0000 m2; Runoff coff.
= 0.4; Time of concentration = 0.5 hr; water supply = 150 lpcd.
4. Design a sewer running 0.8 times full at max discharge for a town with a population of 100,000 and water
supply @ 180 lpcd. Take N=0.013 and slope 1 in 500.
5. Design a sewer to serve a population of 36000; the daily per capita water supply allowance being 135 liters,
of which 80 percent finds its way into the sewer. The slope available for the sewer to be laid is 1 in 625 and
the sewer should be designed to carry four times the dry weather flow when running full. What would be the
velocity of flow in the sewer when running full?
6. (a) Write a note on the peaking factors of sewer design.
(b) Calculate the discharge in sewer of circular section having dia = 1.2 m, gradient 1 in 400; N = 0.012 and
sewer running 0.4 depth.
7. (a) 5-day BOD at 200C has been considered standard for BOD measurement. Explain, Why?
(b) For a sewage sample, 5-day BOD at 200 C is 300 mg/l. What will be 3-day BOD at 300 C
8. The sewage of a town is to be discharged into a river. The quantity of sewage produced per day is 8 million
litres, and its BOD is 250 mg/l. If the discharge in the river is 200 1/s and if its BOD is 6mg/l. (i) find out the
BOD of the diluted water. (ii) what would be the river discharge, if it is desired to reduce the BOD of diluted
water to 20 mg/l.
9. (a) Differentiate clearly between BOD, COD, TOD.
(b) Data for unseeded BOD test are: 5 ml of waste in 300 ml bottle, initial DO = 7.8 mg/l and 5 days DO =
4.3 mg/l. Compute (i) the ultimate BOD if rate constant is 0.1 per day.
(c) For a sewage sample, BOD5 at 200 C is 200 mg/l and is 67% of the ultimate. What will be BOD4 at 300 C.
10. Using the following data, (i) find out Dissolved Oxygen at the end of 1 day
(ii) find the amount of critical DO deficit and its location in the downstream portion of the stream.
River Wastewater
Flow (m3/s) 25 2
DO (mg/l) 9.1 0
BOD5 (mg/l) 2 200
Take de-oxygenation constant as 0.1 per day and re-oxygenation constant as 0.3 per day. Take saturation
DO as 9.10 mg/l.
11. An engineer has proposed that a football park be built near Silchar. A site on a 9.94 ha pasture has been
selected. Drainage from the pasture passes through a culvert under Route 62. The capacity of the culvert is
not known. The highway department uses a 5-year return period for design of culverts for this type of road.
From the topographic data of the site, the overland flow distance is estimated to be 450 m, the slope of the
pasture is estimated to be 2.00 percent, and the runoff coefficient is estimated to be 0.20. Using the IDF curves
for Silchar (given below), estimate the peak flow capacity of the existing culvert in m3/s.

12. A large shopping mall parking lot may be arranged in either of the two configurations shown in Fig. The drain
commissioner prefers the longest time of concentration to allow for the passage of other peak flows in the
drain. Using the highest runoff coefficient for asphaltic pavement, estimate the time of concentration for each
configuration and recommend the one to submit to the drain commissioner. Note: area of (a) is same as area
of (b).

13. Write the standard limits of various characteristics of wastewater as per IS code.
