PRESENTATION OVERVIEW
This presentation will explain how post-installed anchors can be designed for
installation into masonry.
We’ll begin with an overview of masonry fastening applications, and the code
provisions that are relevant to designing post-installed anchors for these applications.
Next, we’ll explain how to perform tension calculations using data given in the anchor
approval.
We’ll continue by explaining how to perform shear calculations using data given in
the anchor approval.
Finally, we’ll work some design examples using hand calculations and using Hilti’s
PROFIS Engineering software.

MASONRY BASE MATERIAL REFERS TO HOLLOW OR GROUT
FILLED CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS (CMU) AND BRICKS

POST-INSTALLED ANCHORS MAY BE USED ON THE FACE, IN
THE TOP OR IN THE SIDE OF A MASONRY WALL

BRICK WALLS CAN BE COMPOSED OF ONE OR MULTIPLE
WYTHES OF BRICKS

POST-INSTALLED ANCHORS MAY NOT BE SUITED FOR THE
MASONRY IN WHICH IT IS BEING INSTALLED

ANCHORING TO MASONRY APPLICATIONS ARE GOVERNED
BY THE IBC, ACI AND ICC-ES AC 01 AND AC 58
International Building Code (IBC) American Concrete Institute (ACI) ICC Evaluation Service
• Chapter 21 of the IBC includes masonry • TMS 402-16 includes strength design, • The ICC-ES acceptance criteria AC 01
provisions allowable stress design and empirical and AC 58 include provisions for testing
• References TMS 402/ACI 530 masonry design for masonry anchoring into masonry for adhesive and
standard • Anchor design for masonry typically expansion anchors
performed using allowable stress design

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA ESTABLISH DESIGN DATA FOR
POST-INSTALLED ANCHORS IN MASONRY
The International Code Council Evaluation Service (ICC-ES) writes acceptance criteria
• Acceptance criteria establish requirements for product recognition under the IBC
• Recognition is provided via an ICC-ES Evaluation Report (ESR)
• Post-installed anchors must be qualified for recognition under the IBC

POST-INSTALLED ANCHORS MUST BE QUALIFIED FOR USE
IN MASONRY THROUGH RIGOROUS TESTING
Testing per ICC-ES acceptance Testing per ICC-ES acceptance Testing per ICC-ES acceptance

THE PRODUCT SPECIFIC ESR DETAILS THE DESIGN
PARAMETER FOR THAT SPECIFIC ANCHOR
• Data is specific to anchor diameter and embedment
• Allowable loads given for critical edge distance (ccr)
and spacing (scr)
– No load reduction required if anchors are
installed at ccr and scr
• Load reduction factor calculated for edge distance
and spacing values less than ccr and scr
– Calculate a reduction factor for each edge
distance and spacing than ccr and scr
– Multiply all reduction factors times allowable load
to obtain a net allowable load for the application
