The District Superintendent want parents and teachers to come together to make student drop-off and
pick-up more functional. All parents and teachers/staff are asked to contact the PTA with ideas on
how to solve the problems that occur during drop-off and pick-up.
Please refer to EngageNYC.org for info and tips regarding taking the State Tests.
Ms. Ferzola is running a “Book Drive” through Mar. 29th. Book donations for young adult through adult
readers will be collected and donated to the Salvation Army. Book donations can be dropped off at
your child’s homeroom.

at the school store, please contact the PTA or sign the volunteer sign-up sheet at PTA meetings.
Treasurer’s Report
• Membership dues collected last month were $290.
• PTA Valentine’s Day Sale made $345. Shoparoo App use brought in $158 for the school.
• BJs and Costco fundraisers : PTA took a vote of which fundraiser to do next year. There were 5 -6 votes
each, so PTA will decide to do one or both at the beginning of the school year during PTC.
• Thanks to Mr. Fiorelli and Mr. Johnsen for sending the PTA a picture of the winning flag football team.
PTA paid for the T shirts for the winning flag football team.
Mrs. Miller’s (Principal)
• ELA/Math State Test Prep : sign up for Saturday test prep classes was low, therefore, test prep classes
will be offered during the week, after school. Students scoring below a 3 on previous tests will be
invited to attend. Letters will be sent out to invite qualifying students. Students will only receive an
invite for the subject (Math,ELA)for which they scored below a 3. There will be 5 sessions each for
Math and ELA, held on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The school hopes to enlist 10 teachers each for
Math and ELA, and keep groups as small as possible. If parents of students who refused(opted) out of
testing last year, want their child to attend test prep, they can contact their grade level Assistant
Principal. The AP will use student grades and teacher recommendations to determine if that student is
eligible, and invite letters will be sent out if necessary.
• “Promotion in doubt” letters were mailed out and backpacked home with that student. This letter
doesn’t mean an automatic need to attend “summer school”, only to identify students who may be in
doubt of promotion. Peer tutoring is available to assist student performance.
• Peer Tutoring : AM peer tutoring attendance is low, hence afternoon sessions are available. An email
was sent out on pupilpath from Ms. Ferzola, and interested students need to contact her to sign up.
Homework help is available on Wednesday mornings as well. Students need to take advantage of
these opportunities for assistance, as the 3rd marking period goes quickly.
• All parents should have received emails from core teachers regarding upcoming agendas for the new
marking period curriculum. It is very important to have a Pupilpath account for parents and one for
students, so that important information such as this will not be missed.
• Basketball : There are boys and girls basketball teams . JHS 194 no longer uses Champs for basketball,
we are now under PSAL. Information will be forthcoming from Ms. Stallone and Mr. Florio regarding
tryouts.
• Internet Safety : There will be a discussion about internet safety at the Open Safety Meeting during the
March PTA meeting. Parents need to be aware of everything their child does online. Students need to
be made aware of the consequences of their online activities, and learn how to manage their internet
experience and footprint. College advisors can use a student’s google footprint to help judge
admission suitability. Parents need to be familiar with Apps such as Instagram and Snapchat so they
can understand what their child is doing on these apps. Teachers can assist parents in learning about
these apps, if needed. An informative documentary called “Terms and Conditions May Apply” is
available on Netflix, explaining privacy concerns with Apps.
• School Traffic Issues : Some drivers are not being mindful of safe driving around the school. Parents
should remind their child to be mindful and use safe practices when they cross streets. If parents have
any recommendations for smoother drop-off practices, they should contact Mrs. Miller.
The March PTA meeting will discuss dress code:
Open dialogue and feedback will take place during this meeting. Dress code builds a sense of culture and
pride in students, and allows for easier identification of students by security agents and staff. The trial
period for use of hoodies is still ongoing, as the results are still being evaluated.
Ms. Stallone (Physical Education Teacher)
March Madness : Information and criteria will be on permission slips. It is a 3 on 3 tournament, co-ed, and
faculty members can join teams. The entire 3 person team needs to be listed on the permission slip. Each
team needs to donate $10, which will go towards the Student Fund (assists students that cannot afford
various fees for events – prom, trips etc.). There will be an introductory meeting before school, at 7:15am, to
start organizing teams.
Mr. Rydell, Ms. Lerner (Science Teachers)
8th Grade Science Test: This is a performance based timed test that consists of 2 parts. The 1st part is a set of 3
lab stations that students work through in a set amount of time for each station. Part 1 takes place from Wed.
May 22nd – Fri. May 31st. Part 2 is a written test consisting of 85 questions in total; 45 multiple choice and 40
short answer. The written test takes place on Mon. June 3rd, over a 2 hour timed period. All prep work is
covered in classroom work, including prep for performing the stations (labs). The test includes science
coursework from 5th, 6th and 7th grade. Students taking “Living Environment” will take the Living Environment
test (which is a Regents exam) on Tues. Jun.18th at 1:15pm, for 3 hours.
Please check with your Science teacher for Urban Advantage Vouchers which provide free admission to
various museums and institutions, and include free admission for up to 4 persons, and a free admission to a
paid activity at that museum or institution.
Ms. Catalanotto
