CULTURAL RELATIVITY

It was established by German-American anthropologist Franz Boas in the early 20th century.

Is the view that moral or ethical systems, which vary from culture to culture, are all equally valid and no
one system is really “better” than any other.

Cultural relativism refers to not judging a culture to our own standards of what is right or wrong, strange
or normal. Instead, we should try to understand cultural practices of other groups in its own cultural
context.

TWO DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF CULTURAL RELATIVITY

ABSOLUTE CULTURAL RELATIVITY

- Everything that happens within a culture must and should not be questioned by outsiders.

CRITICAL CULTURAL RELATIVITY

- Creates questions about cultural practices in terms of who is accepting them and why.

Cultural relativism allows opinions and perceptions to become universal truth.

ETHNOCENTRISM
In 1906, the term ethnocentrism was coined by William Graham Sumner.

Ethnocentrism is the practice of viewing and judging someone else's culture based on the values and
beliefs of one's own.

Ethnocentrism is a major factor in the divisions among members of different races and religious groups.
It is the belief that one’s ethnic group is superior to another.

It can increase the levels of devotion to a community, country, or society.

Ethnocentrism can enhance solidarity in society.

It can produce higher level of self-esteem.

It creates an attitude of independence.

Ethnocentrism limits the choices that people can make.

Trying to understand other cultures without judging them based on your own culture.

We can analyze how the elements fit together without judgments.

Ethnocentrism

The tendency to use one’s culture as a yardstick for judging the ways of other societies.
It can create in-groups loyalties.

It can also lead to harmful discriminations
