Chapter one

1 INTRODUCTION
Practical attachment is the most important place of study that is the way of changing theoretical
into practical one. When I was stayed in the organization on the practical attachment during
summer season I got many experience from that organization related to my field study This report
is conducted to describe my practical attachment works at Mekane Eyesus TVET College. This
college has different aim and teaches many students in several departments and also is responsible
to accept internship students. I have performed our summer field practice at Mekane Eyesus TEVT
College ICT center from July 01/2011 to August 30/2011E.C. During this training, I have learned
and practiced numerous knowledge and skills about basic hardware network installation and
switch configuration that is distributing wired network in some new buildings. And also inside
hardware network installation and configuration. But in this document there consider about main
activity of the internship , objective of the internship, significance of the internship, benefit
,recommendation and conclusion of the study.

1.1 Background of the Organization

Mekane Eyesus TEVT College is one of the institution office which is established in 2001E.C and
656 km far from Addis Ababa with main objective of providing recent and fast ICT service for all
College department. The data center of this college called main data center or core data center and
distribution data center. The main data center is found in telecommunication that data center
network is comes from the Ethiopian telecommunications in the ground by special type of cable
called fiber optics cable.
Mekane Eyesus TEVT College is found in Amhara region south Gonder zone estie worda and the
eastern part of the Mekane Eyesus town. The ICT development directorate is one of the core
service centers’ that has been set up to provide information services within the college. It provides
services in the areas of Information and Communication Technology. Information and
Communication Technologies have become one of the most useful sources of information in the
last few years all over the world, particularly for the development of educational resources. As
more information is made available in a variety of formats and
media in many locations, the need to manage information efficiently becomes more and more
important. In addition with the coming of information revolution, more and more information is

5
available and accessible. Analyzing, interpreting, and making use of the data has been difficult
using the classical or manual analysis.
In this regard, the use of ICT and utilization of up to date technologies could be almost important.
Hence, recognizing the potential of ICT for all-round, Mekane Eyesus TEVT college launched the
ICT internet cafe Centre to provide different ICT services to the community and Staffs of college,
to enable all academic, administrative and managerial staff with the required competencies in ICT
and to carry out internal and international communication as I well as access to resources that
support the Mekane Eyesus TVET college learning, research and other activities.

1.2 Mission
 To satisfy customer.
 To give service to governmental and nongovernmental organization.
 To create job opportunity to the people.
 to develop, deploys and use information and communication technology to improve the
livelihood of every Ethiopian

1.3 Vision
The vision of the Directorate is to provide a customer centered ICT and Business Development
service that:

• Is responsive to the needs of a diverse range of users

• Is a valued and integral part of the University’s academic teaching-learning processes

• Provides the lead in access to electronic forms of information

• Exploits technology to its full potential

• Leads and manages information resources in the college.

1.4 value of organization

During those practical attachment I have seen the following tasks.

 We have done installation in IT and IS lab class

 . Assisting my Supervisor when the developed the training.
 .How to layered cable agreements.
 . How to installing and configuring hard ware and soft ware
 How to configure switch and distribute local are network

6
 How to configure modem and how to distribute the wifi and broadband
network in one area using this device.

1.5 statement of Problems

 unsafe lab class and electronic device
 there is not enough connection access
 lack of it instrument
 It ICT professional worker has work overload
 In the internship most of the time there is no safe conditions because I am not
get the right thing on the right time
 Computers are attacked by viruses.

1.6 Objective of the internship

1.6.1 General Objective of the internship
The general objective of the internship is to develop the capacity and skill of the student and other
customers with technological information and the student change the theory to i practice.

1.6 .2 Specific Objective

The specific objective of my project include:-
• To identify which cable must be used
• To identify network device must be used
• To distribute Internet access in each department
• To configuration and installation of LAN network.
• To distribute network access to each department and office of the University.
• Identify network security

1.7. Significant of the internship

This internship have many advantageous for the student because of we was study in the
university theoretical to change practical internship to develop our skills and knowledge to create
confidence each student
 We get knowledge during design a network installation
 We share experience to from employee
 We have got good experience about the network installation.

7
 We know how to share data or information about the society.
 We know how to distributing network access to the users.
 We know different materials that construct hardware network installation.
 To understand how I develop my skill for the future
 Simply solve network problems

Chapter 2

2. Methods and Materials

Broadly speaking, there are two types of network configuration, peer-to-peer networks and
client/server networks. Such as Peer-to-peer networks and Client/server networks but Mekane
eyesus College select and use Client/server networks because Client/server networks are more
suitable for larger networks. A central computer, or 'server', acts as the storage location for files
and applications shared on the network. Usually the server is a higher than average performance
computer. In generally client server network.
• Less time consuming to maintain the software being used (as most of the maintenance is
managed from the server)
• High levels of security are supported, all of which are controlled from the server.
• No limit to the number of computers that can be supported by the network
• Demands that the network a administrator has high level of IT skills with a good working
knowledge of a server operating system.

9
2.1. Methodology
This is the technique together information to do something. In my practical attachment I use
techniques to get practical skill about LAN network wired installation and configurations of
ASU are listed below.

2.1.1. Data collecting Techniques

Data collecting in one of the techniques that used to building local area network. There are different
data collecting Techniques that building Local area network in Assosa University to each faculty,
department lab and staff office and also each employee’s office. Among that primary source and
secondary source data.
Primary source data collection:
By interview, by Questioners and by observation.
Observation:
This is one of data collecting technique which is the network employees go from building
local area network company office and observe in each installation up to network
configuration.
Questioners:
This also other data collecting technique which is by ask face to face
How to installation and configuration of local area network. And also ask what type of
network device need to building local area network.
Interview:
this the third data collecting technique which is use the network whether face to face or by calling
with distance ask regarding to LAN installation and configuration and also need of martial. This
like duplex transmission mode b/c there is sender and receiver in the same as debate.
Secondary source data collection:
Use manual document and search different books from Google.
This is one of secondary source data collection technique which used to document analysis.

2.2. Tools and material use

There are two types of important tools to building local area network such as hardware
tools and software tools.

10
2.2.1 Hardware Tools
When to building local area network for Assosa University need different network device
network hardware device such as:-

Materials that used for hardware network installation:-

 UTP (cat 6) cable.

 Cable Crimper.
 Cable Tester.
 Cable cutters.
 Cable Trunk.
 RJ45.
 Copper wiring.
 Switch.
 DSL server.

cable that Means the cable is recovering to attach the hole, Cables trunks are pre-terminated UTP
cable or fiber assemblies ordered to specific lengths, ideal for It shows that where the cable is came
from. It is used as a physical road to wired networks. The purpose of the trunk is preventing cables
from any damage.

RJ45 Connector

A register jack (RJ) is a standardized physical network interface for connecting

telecommunications or data equipment. "45” refer to the number of the interface standard. Each
RJ45 connector has eight pins. Ethernet cable has eight wires with eight different colors. Each pins
of RJ45must be match with each colors of Ethernet cable to transfer data. There are two types of
RJ45. These are male RJ45 and female RJ45. Face plate is used to connect male RJ45 and female
RJ45.

UTP cable

Un shielded twisted pair (UTP) is a ubiquitous type of copper cabling used in telephone wiring
and local area networks (LAN). There are five types of UTP cables -- identified with the prefix
CAT, as in category -- each supporting a different amount of bandwidth.

It provides to connect the network to different network devices.

Networking
I have acquired knowledge and skill from the practices: Networking

13
Activity I performed at the beginning we visited the Data Center of the Organization with the
technician. He lectured us with network in the data Center. As we have seen, there is new network
installation in organization. We have seen how designed and how work.

Routers
Routers are networking devices used to extend or segment networks by forwarding packets from
one logical network to another. Routers are most often used in large internet networks that use the
TCP/IP protocol suite and for connecting TCP/IP hosts and local area networks (LAN) to the

14
Internet using dedicated leased lines but not used in our campus in place of router used to core
switch used.

Switches
A network switch is a small hardware device that links multiple computers together within one
local area network, wide area network and different network topology. Network switches work at
Data Link Layer of the OSI model
Cable Cutters:

It is used to remove unwanted pieces from the UTP cable and cable trunk.

Cable cuter: it is used to cut UTP cable RG45 or cutting device.

3. Internship Discussion
My internship /practical attachment objective more consider to build network installation and
configuration for Mekane Eyesus ICT center in each department lab office. Currently Mekane
Eyesus some department can use connection lab and some department can’t use connection lab
but in the feature to expected to use all Mekane Eyesus of all department student and department
office employee to be access internet connection any time. That means the networking
configuration and installation successful all department and staff.

From the internship I learn work ethics and in practical educational process. I learn work ethics
such as punctuality, respecting to other right, tolerance, security honesty etc. before internship
from Mekane Eyesus I learn theoretical only except programming language but from the internship
I develop my skill theoretical into practical in all need of information technology course in
partially fulfillment. For example in networking course there is different topic can be seen such
as network topology ,categories of network , Type of network ,type of cable ,network device ,
network protocol , OSI(open system interaction)layers and network security in generally I see all
network hardware part practical from summer internship. So any one have a good practical
knowledge after return of the summer internship if use time appropriately.

Form me the internship is unsuitable condition so it is difficult to resist this condition because I
can do the internship away from family in this case there occurs devotion of family. when I select
to do the internship away from the family I want to educational challenge but most of the
organization can’t openly share knowledge and also I don’t gate more professional person by
technology. In generally I haven’t good feeling about internship because the internship budget
can’t distribute in appropriate time so without budget stare work is very difficult. But if the
budget can distribute in appropriate time it is very mandatory the internship.

When I see the overall of practical attachment of the internship it is very nice and important to
develop the practical skill the method of me and it is advantage open opportunity the student to
create job and also do your own work rather than office work. So internship to develop our skills
and knowledge to create confidence each student.

16
3.1. Skills that I have learn during the internship
The skills that I have learn during the internship program in Mekane Eyesus college ICT
center are:-

3.1.1. Scientific Skill

As we know scientific skill is the ability to use scientific knowledge to identify questions
that can be answered through a scientific process and draw conclusions based on facts to
understand the natural world and the changes made to it by human activity and to help to make
decisions about it. Some of the scientific skills that I learned in summer internship attachment in
the University are:

3.1.2. Professional skill

A professional skill is a knowledgeable that has ability to create and build something from
practically from the practical attachment. From the internship, practice learned some professional
skill such as:

 Strong Work Ethics

 Time Management Abilities
 Problem-Solving Skills
 Self-Confidence

3.1.3. Entrepreneurship skill

Entrepreneurship means a process of involving the creation of new enterprises. We improve our
entrepreneurship skills in our internship program. Since our country is developing country, the
country needs high network facilities to become developed country. Now a day Ethiopian needs
high amount of network installation. So we went to being participate in network job, because it
gives high profit. Due to this we went to being to participate to being an entrepreneur in network
in the future.

3.2. Challenges that I have got during the internship?

Some situation or challengers doing the internship practical attachment.
. There was also different problem after I get the company related to my internship.
Because of number of intern student they divide us in weeks so we couldn’t seen network setting
as well and computer maintenance.

17
 Department must be consider what infrastructure need for the student when they were
enjoy on the internship when we have seen fact such problems suffer in this year
 The necessary intern practical standard devices and material should have not been
fulfilled for internship students in Mekane Eyesus college ICT center fully.
 The department were not distribute the budget on time for us

Figure 9 Mekane Eyesus college Data center

18
CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 Evaluation and criticize
How did this internship fit your career goal

 To create job opportunity based on practice oriented work

 making us practical skill student and getting experience
 Understand unclear concept during theoretical learning

4.2 Did your career goal change as a result of this internship experience
Partially I develop my practical skill I know theoretically before what network device seems like
and what its advantage for networking system so there is same change in this two consecutive
month.

It helps me to how to relate the courses with the work.

I learn how to working with a group.
I experience how to handle problems.
I adopt the real working environment.

4.3 Discuss recommendation for improving the internship

When we see the general evaluation of the internship practice of attachment not deep sorrow
because I get a practical knowledge but many problems is there from the organization I enjoying
unsafe lab class and virus attack computer and also uninstall software and also we are not enable
to do a practical work based on the schedule submit to our adviser and see the department the beget
is not fends on the right time to consider such problem you are solve them it makes good chance
to the student unless unneeded.

4.4 Discuss your strengths and area for improving as self-evaluation

In the internship I perform activity as I learn the theoretical part to see practically about
network at the time
 I attend the practice area of networking
 I ask the employee during the practice and I work them
 I discuses with my friend they enjoy the internship

19
4.5. My feelings about the internship
From this internship gains the company to know the strength and weakness that flow to
the students. The students will be able to develop our own work habits, it used to easily understand
the real world problems that forward from the institutions, how to solve the problem that forward
from any challenge, And also how to work the final project wisely and effectively.

Also get the followings are some:

 We learn the discipline of work place.

 we improved my communication skill with different workers
 Social life with the staff member in work place.

generally I have felt both good and bad things from the internship that is good thing is that I
get satisfaction from the job place and i have got good adaptation from the organization and
bad thing is that our university is did not sent our internship money to work place on time.

4.6. Conclusion and Recommendation

This internship practice attachment describe the local area network of METEVT which practical
study include introduction, background, objective, proposed design and concerns about LAN
network. From this internship I get some knowledge about LAN networking concept is listed.
During the internship practice partially I understand what seems like the theoretical part we learned
before practically and I have seen that the local area network distribution in Mekane Eyesus and
also the VLAN distribution to each department and its lab class according to its comfort installation
LAN in new office and configuration how to connect the network device to each other from fiber
optic cable to RJ 45 to achieve this LAN network expansion of METEVT. the ICT staff members
are work together almost it reached most the building of the college and also to keep the security
of the network from external traffics using the firewall device.

4.7 Recommendation
There are many uncomfortable conditions but I recommended the department must be considering
what infrastructure need for the student they are enjoying on the internship The And when I see
the organization also less control and they are not make safe the condition for practice condition
for the student .The must solve the network problem and must have automatic generator to do the

20
practice as you need and by find a skill man power to solve network problems inside the college
without call a man power from other
Also, I would like to strongly recommend our department to create a safe condition to be the
internship program in winter season and there must have a long period of internship program for
the future. Lastly, I recommend the students those have internship for the future to be attended
and practice actively.
