1. Define angle of ascent.

2. Diagrammatically represent the forces acting on a body when it slides either up or down on an inclined
plane without considering the effect of friction.
3. Define angle of response.
4. What basic assumption is made in the design of clutch?
5. What is the apparent co – efficient of friction in belt drives?
6. Distinguish between sliding and rolling friction.
7. How centrifugal tension affects the power transmission in belt drive?
8. Define the term limiting friction.
9. What is creep in the case of belt?
10. Which type of screw thread is preferable in power transmission?
11. The following data refer to an open belt drive, diameter of larger pulley is 400 mm, diameter of smaller
pulley is 250 mm, distance between two pulleys are 2 m, co – efficient of friction between smaller
pulley surface and belt is 0.4, maximum tension when the belt is on the point of slipping is 1200N. Find
the power transmitted at speed 10m/s. It is desired to increase the power. Which of the following two
methods you will select?

a. Increasing the initial tension in the belt by 10%.

b. Increasing the coefficient of friction between the smaller pulley surface and belt by 10% by the
application of suitable dressing on the belt. Find also, the percentage increase in each case.

12. A single plate clutch, effective on both sides, is required to transmit 25kW at 3000 rpm. Determine the
outer and inner radii of frictional surface if the coefficient of friction is 0.255, the ratio of radii is 1.3 and
the maximum pressure is not to exceed 0.15N/mm2. Also determine the axial thrust to be provided by
springs, assume the theory of uniform wear.

13. Prove that the torque transmitted by a cone clutch. Prove that the maximum efficiency of screw jack
14. A power of 60Kw is transmitted by a multi plate clutch at 1500rpm. Axial intensity of pressure is not to
exceed 0.15N/mm2. Coefficient of friction for the friction surface is 0.15. The external radius of friction
surface is 120 mm. Also the external radius is equal to 1.25 times of internal radius. Determine the
number of plates needed to transmit the required power, if wear is uniform.

15. An effort of 200N is required to just to move a certain body up an inclined plane of an angle 150, the
force acting parallel to the plane. If the angle of inclination of the plane is made 200, the effort required
parallel to the plane is found to be 200N. Determine the weight of the body and coefficient of friction.

16. A single dry plate clutch transmits 7.5kW at 900rpm. The axial pressure is limited to 0.07N/mm2. If the
coefficient of friction is 0.25, find mean radius and face width of the friction lining assuming the ratio of
the mean radius to the face width as 5 and outer and inner radii of the clutch plate.

17. A load of 10Kn is raised by means of a screw jack, having a square threaded screw of 12mm pitch and
of mean diameter 50m. If a force of 100N is applied at the end of a lever to raise the load, what should
be the length of the lever used? Coefficient of friction is 0.15. What is the mechanical advantage
obtained? State whether the screw is self locking or not.

18. A leather faced conical clutch has a cone angle 300. If the intensity of pressure between the contact
surfaces is limited to 0.35MPa and the breadth of the conical surface is not to exceed one – third of the
mean radius, find the dimensions of the contact surfaces to transmit 22.5kW at 2000rpm. Assume
uniform rate of wear and take coefficient of friction as 0.15.

19. A compressor requires 90kW to operate at 250rpm. The drive is by V belts from an electric motor
running at 750rpm. The diameter of the pulley on the compressor shaft must not be greater than 1 meter
while the centre distance between the pulleys is limited to 1.75m. The belt speed should not exceed
1600m/min. Determine the number of V belts required to transmit the power if each belt has a cross
sectional area 375mm2, density 1000kg/mm3 and an allowable tensile stress of 2.5MPa. The groove
angle pulley is 350. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25. Also calculate the
length required for each belt.

20. An open belt drive connects two pulleys 120cm and 50cm diameters on parallel shafts 4m apart. The
maximum tension in the belt is 1855N. The coefficient of friction is 0.3. The driver pulley of diameter
120cm runs at 200rpm. Calculate

a. The power transmitted.

b. The torque on each of the two shafts.

21. Determine the width of a 9.75mm thick leather belt required to transmit 15kW from a motor running at
900rpm. The diameter of the driving pulley is 300mm. The driven pulley runs at 300rpm and the
distance between the centers of two pulleys is 3m. The density of the leather can be taken as 1000kg/m 3.
Take coefficient of friction is 0.3 and maximum allowable shear in the leather is 2.5MPa. and the drive
is open drive.

22. A friction clutch is used to rotate a machine from a shaft rotating at a uniform speed of 250rpm. The disc
type clutch has both of its side effective, the coefficient of friction being 0.3. The outer and the inner
diameters of friction plate are 200mm and 120mm respectively. Assuming uniform wear of the clutch,
the intensity of pressure is not to be more than 100kN/m2. If the moment of inertia of the rotating parts
of the machine is 6.5kg.m2, determine the time to attain the full speed by the machine and the energy
lost in slipping of the clutch.

What will be the intensity of pressure, if the condition of uniform pressure of the clutch is considered?
Also determine the ratio of power transmitted with uniform wear to that with uniform pressure.
