ME4011: MACHINE DESIGN - II

Assignment No.1
S8ME To be submitted on 15-01-2020

1.An automatic plate clutch consists of two pairs of contacting surfaces with asbestos lining. The
maximum engine torque is 250 N-m. The coefficient of friction is 0.35. The inner and outer diameters
of the friction lining are 175 and 250 mm respectively. Clamping force is provided by nine springs,
each compressed by 5 mm to give a force of 800 N, when the clutch is new.
(i) What is the factor of safety with respect to slippage when the cutch is brand new?
(ii) What is the factor of safety with respect to slippage after initial wear has occurred?
(iii) How much wear of friction lining can take place before the clutch will slip?

2. A multiple-disk wet clutch is to be designed for transmitting a torque of 85 N·m.Space restrictions

limit the outside disk diameter to 100 mm. Design values for themolded friction material and steel
disks to be used are f = 0.06 (wet) andpmax= 1400 kPa. Determine appropriate values for the disk
inside diameter, thetotal number of disks, and the clamping force. The choice of ri is in the commonly
used range 0.45ro<ri< 0.80ro.
3. A plate clutch consists of one pair of contacting surfaces. The inner and outer diameters of the
friction disk are 100 and 200 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction is 0.1 and the permissible
intensity of pressure is 1 N/mm2. Assuming uniform wear theory, calculate the power transmitting
capacity of the clutch at 750 rpm. Calculate the power transmitting capacity of the clutch using
uniform pressure theory. Also calculate the power transmitting capacity of the clutch using uniform
pressure theory.
4. An oil immersed multi-disk clutch with cork sheet as the friction material is used on a scooter
engine. The torque transmitted by the clutch is 10 N-m. The coefficient of friction between the cork
sheet and the steel plate in the wet condition is 0.2. The permissible pressure on the cork sheet is 0.1
N/mm2 . The inner and outer diameters of the friction lining are 65 and 95 mm, respectively. There
are radial slots, on the friction surface for the circulation of the coolant, which reduces the effective
friction area. To account for these slots, the number of contacting surfaces can be increased by 5%.
Assuming uniform wear theory, calculate the required number of contacting surfaces.
5. Determine the principal dimensions of a cone clutch faced with leather totransmit 30 kW at 750
r.p.m. from an electric motor to an air compressor. Sketch a sectional frontview of the clutch and
provide the main dimensions on the sketch.
Assume: semi-angle of the cone = 12.5°; μ= 0.2 ;mean diameter of cone = 6 to 10d where d is the
diameter of shaft; allowable normal pressure for leather and cast iron = 0.075 to 0.1 N/mm 2; load
factor = 1.75 and mean diameter to face width ratio = 6.

6. A car engine develops maximum power of 15 kW at 1000 rpm. The clutch used is single plate
clutch both sides effective having external diameter 1.25 times internal diameter μ = 0.3. Mean axial
pressure is not to exceed 0.085 N/ mm2. Determine the dimension of the friction surface and the force
necessary to engage the plates. Assume uniform pressure condition.
7. A plate clutch has three discs on the driving shaft and two discs on the drivenshaft, providing four
pairs of contact surfaces. The outside diameter of the contact surfaces is240 mm and inside diameter
120 mm. Assuming uniform pressure and μ= 0.3, find the totalspring load pressing the plates together
to transmit 25 kW at 1575 r.p.m.If there are 6 springs each of stiffness 13 kN/m and each of the
contact surfaces has worn awayby 1.25 mm, find the maximum power that can be transmitted,
assuming uniform wear.
8. A single plate clutch is to transmit 18 kW at 1500 rpm. The faces of the clutch are lined with a
special material to enhance the coefficient of friction to 0.35. The permissible bearing pressure is 0.3
MPa. The ratio of inner to outer diameter of the clutch facing is 0.7. The clutch is engaged by 4
springs of 30 mm mean diameter, arranged symmetrically. The spring compresses by 2.5mm for
disengagement with an increase of pressure of 10%. Determine: (i) diameter of the clutch facing (ii)
diameter of the spring wire and (iii) number of coils in the spring. Assume uniform pressure. Working
shear stress and the modulus of rigidity for the spring wire may be assumed to be 400 MPa and 80
GPa respectively.
9. A multi plate clutch having outer diameter of diameter 250mm and inner diameter of 150mm has to
transmit60 kW at 1200 rpm. The end thrust is 4.5 kN and coefficient of friction is
0.08.Calculatethenumber of plates assuming (i) Uniform wear and (ii) uniform pressure distribution
on theplates.
10. A friction clutch is used to rotate a machine from a shaft rotating at a uniform speed of 250 rpm.
The disc type clutch has both of its sides effective, the coefficient of friction being 0.3. The outer and
the inner diameters of the friction plate are 200 mm and 120 mm respectively. Assuming uniform
wear of the clutch, the intensity of pressure is not to be more than 100 kN/m 2. If the moment of inertia
of the rotating parts of the machine is 6.5 kg.m 2, determine the time to attain the full speed by the
machine and the energy lost in slipping of the clutch.
What will be the intensity of pressure, if the condition of uniform pressure of the clutch is
considered? Also, determine the ratio of power transmitted with uniform wear to that with uniform
pressure.

11. A cone clutch with a semi-cone angle of 15° transmits 10 kW at600 rpm. The normal pressure
intensity between the surfaces in contact is not toexceed 100 kN/m 2. The width of the friction surfaces
is half of the mean diameter.Assumeμ= 0.25. Determine
(i) the outer and inner diameters of the plate
(ii) width of the cone face
(iii) the axial force to engage the clutch.
12. A single plate clutch consists of one pair of contacting surfaces. Because of space limitations, the
outer diameter of the friction disk is fixed as D. The permissible intensity of pressure is p and the
coefficient of friction, μ. Assuming uniform wear theory, plot the variation of the torque transmitting
capacity against the ratio of diameters (d /D). Show that the torque transmitting capacity of the clutch
is maximum when (d /D) is equal to 0.577.
13.The semi-cone angle of a cone clutch is 12.5° and the contactsurfaces have a mean diameter of 80
mm. Coefficient of friction is 0.32. What is theminimum torque required to produce slipping of the
clutch for an axial force of200 N?
If the clutch is used to connect an electric motor with a stationary flywheel, determine the time
needed to attain the full speed and the energy lost during slipping.Motor speed is 900 rpm and the
moment of inertia of the flywheel is0.4 kg.m2.
