1.0 INTRODUCTION:
M/S Pakistan Refinery Limited (PRL) intend to replace shell plates of existing tank with
alternate grade material. In this connection PRL engaged M/S Zishan Engineers (Pvt.)
Ltd (ZEL) as consultant for verification for using ASTM-36 as alternate material for
replacing the existing shell plates. Individual reports for each tank were submitted earlier
and this consolidated report is being submitted for all tanks.

Notes:
1. Existing shell plates can be replaced with A-36 plates of same thickness.
2. Existing shell plates cannot be replaced with A-36 plates of same thickness.
Additional wind girder is required
3. Existing shell plates can be replaced with A-36 plates of same thickness. But
additional wind girder is required.
4. Existing shell plates cannot be replaced with A-36 plates of same thickness.
The calculation demonstrates that the existing shell plates can be replaced with A-36 plates of
same thickness. The corrosion allowance is taken to be 1.6mm. Moreover, intermediate wind
girder is not required when the shell is checked for buckling due to wind load in uncorroded
condition. However, when the buckling is checked for corroded condition, there is a requirement
for an intermediate wind girder.
As regards compatibility of materials, please note that if the thickness requirements of ASTM A-
36 are satisfied, it can be used with ASTM A-516 Gr. 65 or ASTM A-283 Gr. C, as it is
compatible with both the steel grades having the same P-No. ( 1 ). But since the Material Groups
(as per table 4-4 of API-650) are different, A-36 & A-283 Gr. C being Group I materials and A-
516 Gr. 65 being Group IV material, Min. Design Metal Temperature (MDMT ), toughness
requirements, stress relieving requirements and max. allowable thicknesses may be different and
need to be checked. These are discussed below:
- In the present case, thickness of steel plates is 6 mm and the corresponding MDMT for
Group I materials is -12o C and that of Group IV materials is -14o C, hence the difference
is insignificant.
- There are no toughness check/impact testing requirements as long as the design
temperature is equal to or higher than the MDMT.
- Group I materials require Stress relieving of all nozzles 12” or larger, when the plate
thickness exceeds 25 mm, whereas for Group IV materials all nozzles requiring
reinforcement shall be stress relieved when the plate thickness is equal to or greater than
13 mm.
- Max. allowable thickness for Group I materials is 25 mm, whereas for Group IV
materials it is 40 mm.
Hence in our case, none of these requirements apply and ASTM A-36 can be safely used to
replace ASTM A-516 Gr. 65 or ASTM A-283 Gr. C plates.

The calculations demonstrate that the existing shell plates can be replaced with A-36 plates of
same thickness with additional requirement of Wind Girder. The corrosion allowance is taken to
be 1.6 mm.
- In the present case, max. thickness of shell plates is 16.73 mm and the corresponding
MDMT for Group I materials is -1o C and that of Group IV materials is -6o C, hence the
difference is insignificant.
C plates
