Discovery and Exploration: Home Based Learning Materials For Mathematics Grade 4

The document provides learning materials for grade 4 mathematics. Lesson 1 discusses visualizing large numbers up to 10,000 using number discs and blocks. Lesson 2 explains place value and how to determine the value of each digit in numbers up to 100,000 by identifying the place value and multiplying the digit by its place value. Key concepts covered are visual representations of numbers, place values in 5-digit numbers, and determining a digit's value based on its place value.

LESSON 1
Visualizes numbers up to 10 000 with
emphasis on numbers 1001 - 10000
QUARTER 1, Week 1

Discovery and Exploration

Last November 9, 2013 Super Typhoon Yolanda hit the island of Panay. A volunteer
group distributed 24, 631 cans of sardines as relief goods for the victims of the typhoon.
Can you imagine how big the number 24, 631 is?

One way to visualize how big the number is by the representations using number
discs.

Another way to visualize how big the number is by the representations using blocks
and grids.

Example:

A total of 2 315 teachers and students joined the “Save Mother Earth” campaign.
How will you show 2 315 ?

You can use number disc to show 2 315.

Lets Remember This

How do we visualize numbers?

We visualize numbers by using representations. In this lesson, we used numbers discs
and blocks to represent numbers. We can also used tables, charts and other things in
visualization of numbers.

Discovery and Exploration

In 2013, Barangay San Sebastian Harvested 64 789 kilograms of mangoes. What does
each digit 64 789 mean? Study how 64 789 is written in the place value chart.

THOUSANDS UNITS Periods

Hundred Ten One Hundreds Tens Ones Place Value
6 4 7 8 9 Digits

The digit 9 is in the ones place. Its value is 9.

The digit 10 is in the tens place. Its value is 80.
The digit 7 is in the hundreds place. Its value is 700.
The digit 4 is in the one thousands place. Its value is 4 000.
The digit 6 is in the ten thousands place. Its value is 60 000.

The value of the digit is determined by multiplying that digit by its place value.

Example:

Give the place value and value of the underlined digits 65 981.

Digit Place Value Value

6 Ten thousand 60 000
5 Thousand 5 000
9 Hundreds 900
8 Tens 80
1 Ones 1

What is the place value of 6? (ten thousand)

What is its value? (60 000)
How did you get the value? (by multiplying the digit by its place value; 6 x 10 000)

Lets Remember This

What are the place values in a 5 digit number?

How do you determine the value of a digit in a given number?
In giving the place value and value of a digit of a number up to 100 000:
 Identify the place value in which the digit belongs to as ones, tens, hundreds,
thousand, ten thousands.
 The value of a digit could be arrived at by multiplying said digit by its place value.
 The place value of a digit is always 10 times as great as the place value of the digit to
its right.
