TOPIC: Legal, Ethical, and Societal Issues in Media and Information Literacy

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
1. Define and explain copyright and other related issues.
2. Discuss current issues related to copyright in relation to actions
of government and private sectors, including but not limited to
Cybercrime Law RA10175.
3. Explain actions to promote ethical use of media and
information.
4. Enumerate opportunities and challenges in media and
information

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners are able to:

a. Identify codes, convention, and message and how they affect the audience, producers,
and other stake holders.
b. Reflect on how important information can be conveyed to create the desired
impression.

INTRODUCTIONS:

 Checking of attendance
 Introduce the following by stating that at the end of the lesson, the learners shall be
able to:

The learners understand media and information codes, conventions, and


messages in relation to consumers, producers, and other stakeholders.

I. MOTIVATION:

Activity 1 : Board Work


a. Read his sentence after writing it on the board “Language may be a
source of misunderstandings by Marshall McLuhan, 1964”
b. Ask learners to analyze the quote, then, let them share what they think to
the class.

II. INSTRUCTIONS/DELIVERY:

Activity 2 : Discuss with the learners the following definitions:

a. Instruct learners to form groups of 5 to 10 members. Provide each


group with a permanent marker and a sheet of manila paper.
b. Direct learners to identify five (5) signs and symbols in their
community that are used to convey information (ex. for directions,
locations of attractions, others).
c. Call groups to present their work.
d. Direct presenter to answer how these signs and symbols are used to
make people in the community understand the message being
conveyed.

III. PRACTICE:
Activity 3: Present the following Philippine postcards to the learners.
Say “The first step in becoming media and information literate is to
understand how information, ideas and meaning are communicated
through and by various media and other information providers, such as
libraries, archives, museums and the Internet”.

V. ENRICHMENT:
Instruct the learners to write a reflection paper about the previous activity using
the following guide questions:
a. What information codes, conventions and messages about our country is
communicated enthuse postcards?
b. If you are to create a postcard for a place or organization of your choice,
what technical and symbolic codes would you use to convey important
information and create the desired impression? Why?
c. How is understanding of the technical and symbolic codes contribute to
media and information literacy?
d. Others reflection that they may want to share.
