ABSTRACT

Foundry practice is an important facet in all engineering activities, and the development of any
nation’s technology depends greatly on the development of its foundries.

Foundry industries have much to gain in processing moulding sands so as to improve casting’s
quality, increase production and lower total production costs. The foundries find it difficult to
purchase or acquire this basic equipment to test the properties of materials, which are vital to
the production of sound, dimensionally accurate castings.

Automation in this field helps to improve the foundry environment and accuracy of the cast
parts. Efficiency of moulding is affected by various parameters like permeability, collapsibility,
adhesiveness etc., so it is a must to avoid defects in casting. Rammers are employed for
pressing the sand in the mould box to make the mould become sufficiently hard and uniformly
dense in all parts of the mould.

An Electromagnetic Sand Rammer (EMSR) was designed and fabricated for dropping a known
weight from a fixed distance and using the force produced by energized coil to compact the
sand

The rammer was designed in order to help small-scale foundries acquire basic foundry
equipment to test and control raw materials in order to improve castings quality.

The design of ESMR is to enhance indigenous development of small scale foundry industries
by providing test equipment at minimal cost.

The designing of Electromagnetic Sand Rammer is to enhance indigenous development of

small scale foundry industries by providing test equipment at minimal cost.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The satisfaction and euphoria that accompany the successful completion of any task would be
incomplete without the mention of the people who made it possible, whose constant guidance
and encouragement crowned the efforts with success.

We would like to profoundly thank BMS Institute of Technology & Management for
providing such a healthy environment for the successful completion of thisProject.

We gratefully acknowledge our delightful thank to our worthy Principal Dr. G N MohanBabu
who is a source of inspiration to all of us & has taken care of all those problems which may be
faced by the students.

It gives us immense pleasure to thank Dr. H K Govindaraju, Professor and Head of

Department for his constant support and encouragement.

Also, we would like to express my deepest sense of gratitude to my Project guide Mr.
O.Gurumurthy, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering for constant
support and effective guidance throughout the Project.

We would also like to thank our Project Co-ordinator Mr. G L. Ananthakrishnamurthy

Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering for his constant encouragement to
come out with new idea and all teaching and non-teaching staff of Mechanical & other
Departments friends who have directly or indirectly helped using the completion of thisProject.

Last, but not the least, we would hereby acknowledge and thank our parents who have been a
source of inspiration and also instrumental in the successful completion of thisProject.
