Module 1 - Les #11 Influence Line - Application

This document provides an overview of Influence Lines and their application for determining maximum shear and bending moment from applied loads. It contains two sample problems demonstrating how to use influence lines to find the maximum positive and negative shear at a point on a beam and the maximum positive reaction, shear, and bending moment at other locations due to concentrated, uniform live, and uniform dead loads. The problems are solved by placing the loads at locations of maximum positive or negative ordinates on the influence lines. References for additional resources on influence lines and structural analysis are also provided.

LESSON #11: Influence Lines-Application of Loadings

 In this lesson you will be able to draw influence line for a statically determinate structure, also to
determine the maximum live shear and moment in a member.

All concepts sample problems and figures are from the followings books,

Single Concentrated Live Load

The value of a response function due to any single concentrated load can be obtained by multiplying the
magnitude of the load by the ordinate of the response function influence line at the position of the load.

To determine the maximum positive value of a response function due to a single moving concentrated load,
the load must be placed at the location of the maximum positive ordinate of the response function influence
line,

Where as to determine the maximum negative value of the response function, the load must be placed at the
location of the maximum negative ordinate of the influence line.

Problem #1: Problem #2

For the beam shown, determine the maximum A uniform live load of 5 kN/m and single
positive and negative shears and the maximum concentrated live load of 18 kN are placed on the
positive and negative bending moments at point C floor beams. If the beam also support a uniform
due to a concentrated live load of 90 kN, a uniformly dead load of 600 N/m, determine the maximum
distributed live load of 40 kN/m, and a uniformly positive reaction at D and positive shear in panel
distributed dead load of 20 kN/m. EF of the girder and the maximum positive
