Casting Assignment: Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

This document provides instructions for a casting assignment. Students are asked to conduct a casting experiment to determine the total heat required and casting mould constant. They are provided information on the experiment conditions, including the room temperature of 24°C, heating mild steel scrap to 100°C above its melting point of 660°C, and using 19% more metal than needed to fill the mould cavity. Students must calculate and report the surface area and volume of the cast, volume and mass of heated metal, total heat required, and casting mould constant based on the given properties of mild steel and a solidification time of 20 minutes. The assignment must be submitted before the due date and time following the specified report format and guidelines

You are a Technologist at casting station at University of Johannesburg. You have given
task to conducted casting experiment to determine total heat required to accomplish
the casting. In addition, determine the casting mould constant used during casting. Use
the information in this document to calculate.

The experiment done at the following condition.

1. Conducted at room temperature of 24oC
2. Heat mild steel scrap in the furnace 100oC above melting point,
3. The amount of metal heated was be 19% more than what is need to fill the mould
cavity.
4. Record time taken to solidify was 20 min.

Given: Properties of mild steel
