1 Introduction
This technical standard defines the Maersk Oil requirements for thermal insulation for
pipe work, vessels, equipment and ducting operating with surface temperatures ranging
from -50°C to +750°C.
This standard forms part of the overall Maersk Oil Technical Standards (MOTS).
The MOTS specify the following:
• Applicable codes and standards.
• Company requirements additional to applicable codes and standards specified

2 Objective
The objective of this technical standard is to ensure a consistent design for the
fabrication and installation of thermal insulation, across all new and existing Company
facilities with regards to safety, the environment, operability and maintainability.

3 Scope
3.1 General
This technical standard shall apply to all new installations, and to modifications and
extensions to existing Company facilities, both onshore and offshore. The standard shall
apply during all project stages including, but not limited to, conceptual, FEED, detailed
design, procurement, construction and commissioning.
This technical standard applies for all insulation, except for acoustic insulation covered by
MOG-FP-WEN-STD-0017: “MOTS-17 Noise”. Material requirements for fire insulation and
architectural insulation are covered by this standard; however the specific design,
including insulation thickness shall appear from specific design and fabrication drawings.

3.2 Existing Facilities

When applied to modifications and extensions to existing facilities, this standard shall
take priority over older and different standards applied to the existing facilities, to the
extent required to obtain safe and operable modifications.
However, this technical standard is not retroactive, although it may be used as a
reference point for performing an audit or gap analysis of existing facilities. When
significant deficiencies compared to industry practice and accepted safety levels, etc., are
found on existing facilities, then the improvements shall comply with MOTS.

3.3 Dispensations
Dispensations from this technical standard shall not be permitted unless prior written
approval is obtained from the relevant Technical Authority (TA), in compliance with MOG-
FP-GEN-STD-0206: “Technical Authority and Dispensation Standard”. Proposals for
dispensations shall be prepared only when:
• Significant cost savings may be obtained without compromising on Health, Safety
and Environment (HSE) and operability requirements;
• New experience shows that the requirements are not suitable for the design or
work being performed;
• Concepts or requirements specified are not possible or feasible to fulfil, e.g. when
modifying existing facilities.

bottom of the pipe section. Longitudinal joints in Terostat-PC or silicone-coated glass
fabric joints shall be placed at 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock position.
Outer covering of SS cladding shall be assembled by either screws, rivets or band
clamps. Material shall be AISI 316. When band clamps are used, these shall be installed
with maximum 250mm spacing between clamps.

8.5 Removable Insulation

8.5.1 General
Removable insulation for flanges and valves, e.g. tailor-made jackets or preformed
insulation boxes, shall be suitable for quick removal and re-installation. All tailor-made
jackets shall fit the actual valve/flange/equipment and secure overlap to incoming pipes.

8.5.2 Tailor-Made Jackets

The use of tailor made jackets for insulation shall on a case by case basis be evaluated
and pre approved before commencement of fabrication work by the BU TA-2.

8.5.2.1 Outer Material

The outer material of tailor-made jackets and preformed insulation boxes shall be silicone
rubber-proofed fabric made from glass fibre. Other materials may be used provided that
the material properties are documented to be equal to or better than silicone rubber).
The material shall be suitable for use in temperatures ranging between -30ºC and
+230ºC. Sewing threads shall be SS reinforced Kevlar and shall be suitable for use in the
same temperature range as the outer insulation material.

8.5.2.2 In-Fill Materials

The insulation in-fill materials of tailor-made jackets shall be a flexible mat of glass fibre
having a density according to insulation class, foil faced on one side.
The insulation jackets shall be non-combustible and shall be designed to avoid the
insulation material from sagging, causing reduction of the insulation properties of the
jackets.
The thickness of insulation shall be 25mm for DN 80 pipes or smaller, and 50mm for
diameter DN 100 pipes and larger.
Other insulating materials may only be used if specified in the contract. Insulation
thickness of other insulation materials shall be based on calculation of thermal
conductivity and insulation class.
Mineral wool shall not be permitted.

8.5.2.3 Water Ingress and Drainage

The insulation jackets shall be designed to withstand water ingress caused by deluge.
Each tailor-made jacket shall be provided with a hole for drainage at its lowest point. The
drainage hole shall be installed such that water cannot enter into the internals of the
cover and saturate the insulating fibre. The drainage holes shall have sealant applied
between the reinforced ring and the silicone rubber sheets on both sides of the jacket.

8.5.2.4 Locking Mechanism for Tailor-Made Jackets

The locking mechanism of the tailor-made jackets shall be of the Velcro flap fastener
type. In exposed areas, the tailor-made jackets shall be fastened to the pipe by SS
bands. The fastener type used shall be proven through experience. Minimum width shall
be 100mm for jackets applied on valves/flanges larger than DN 80, and 50mm for
jackets applied on valves/flanges DN 80 and smaller.

8.5.2.5 Metal Parts

All metal parts in the tailor-made jackets shall be SS grade AISI 316 or better.
Grommets for reinforcing drain holes may be of brass.

8.5.2.6 Identification of Tailor-Made Jackets

Each removable insulation cover shall be provided with an identification plate with the
following information:
• Vendor name;
• Line number or tag number;
• Cover number.
The identification plate shall be easily readable and shall be placed under the flap
fastener. The identification plate shall be made of a material resistant to water.

8.5.3 Preformed Insulation Boxes

Boxes shall be installed such that water is shed and cannot accumulate on any part. Flat
heads shall not be permitted.
Longitudinal seams of metal jackets on horizontal or sloping pipelines shall be located
maximum 60 degrees away from the lowest point of the circumference.
All seams on metallic jackets shall be made water proof, with the application of a metal
seam sealant.
All joints on valve boxes shall be 90 degrees offset from valve spindle, or other means to
prevent hand injuries.
Boxes, including insulation, for flanges, valves, etc., shall be equipped with quick locks
for easy removal and re-installation.

9 Deliverable Certification Requirements

The deliverable certification shall consist of a statement of compliance with the applicable
regulations, codes and standards, this standard and the coating manufacturer
recommendations and requirements.
The project specification for the specific work shall be appended to the certificate.
The certification level shall correspond to EN 10204: “Metallic Products - Types of
Inspection Documents”, level 3.1., containing statement of compliance with the order,
with indication of results of specific inspection validated by the Contractor’s authorized
inspection representative.
