Tutorial 2 (EMG 2016)

1. Figure Q1 shows a conducting loop of area 20 cm2 and resistance 4 Ω. If B = âz 40

cos(104t) mWb/m2, find the induced current in the loop and indicate its direction.
(Sadiku Q9.4)

Figure Q1

2. If |B| = 0.2 cos(150t) Wb/m2 and the area of the loop in Figure Q2 is 10 cm 2,
calculate V1 and V2. (Sadiku Q9.10)

Figure Q2
3. The square loop shown in Figure Q3 is coplanar with a long, straight wire carrying a
current i  t   2.5 cos 2  10 4 t  A
(a) Determine the emf induced across a small gap created in the loop.
(b) Determine the direction and magnitude of the current that would flow through a 4 
resistor connected across the gap. The loop has an internal resistance of 1  .

4. A conducting rod moves with a constant velocity of 3 âz m/s parallel to a long straight
wire carrying current 15 A as in Figure Q4. Calculate the emf induced in the rod and state
which ends is at higher potential. (Sadiku Q9.7)

5. In Q4, the long wire and the rod AB both lie on the same plane. Consider now a
scenario whereby they lie on different planes, whose cross section is as shown in
Figure Q5; other conditions remain the same. Calculate VAB.

7. A conducting bar is connected via flexible leads to a pair of rails in a magnetic

field B = âx 6 cos(10t) mWb/m2 as in Figure Q7. If the z-axis is the position of
the bar at time t = 0 and the bar’s velocity is ây 2 cos(10t) m/s, find the voltage
induced in the bar. (Sadiku Q9.8)

8. The parallel-plate capacitor shown in Figure Q9 is filled with a lossy dielectric

material of relative permittivity  r and conductivity  . The separation between the
plates is d and each plate is of area A. The capacitor is connected to a time-varying
voltage source V  t  . (Ulaby Q6.16)

(a) Obtain an expression for I c , the conduction current flowing between the plates
inside the capacitor, in terms of the given quantities.
(b) Obtain an expression for I d , the displacement current flowing inside the capacitor.
(c) Based on your expressions for parts (a) and (b), give an equivalent-circuit
representation for the capacitor.
(d) Evaluate the values of the circuit elements for A  2 cm 2 , d  0.5 cm ,  r  4 ,
  2.5 S/m , and V  t   10 cos 3  10 3 t  V.
