Objective
To determine the exact molarity of a hydrochloric acid solution
Procedure
1. Na2CO3 were weighed accurately for about 1.33g. And the exact mass was recorded.
2. Na2Co3 were dissolved in 50ml of water in a 100ml beaker.
3. The solution was transferred into a 250 ml volumetric flask. The beaker was rinsed with
distilled water.
4. Distilled water was added to the mark and the flask were stopper. To make the solution
homogeneous, the volumetric flask was shaken by turning it upside down a few times.
1. 2.2 ml of concentrated HCl were transferred into a 250 ml beaker containing a little water.
2. Acid were diluted to approximately 250ml of diluted water.
1. Burette were filled with diluted HCl solution that were prepared in (b) above. The initial
burette reading was recorded.
2. 25.0 ml of the standard Na2CO3 were pipette into 250 ml conical flask and 2 to 3 drops of
methyl orange indicator were added.
3. Na2CO3 in the conical flask were titrated with the HCI from the burette slowly while shaking
the flask till the indicator colour changed from yellow to red. The burette reading at the end
point of the titration were recorded.
4. The titration was repeated 3 times. And all data were recorded.
5. The exact molarity al the HCl solution were calculated.
Result
1. Standardization of HCl with Na2CO3 solution

Discussion
Standardization of HCl solution with Na 2CO3 primary standard were conducted which include
the preparation of 0.05M Na2CO3 solution as the standard solution by dissolving a known amount of
the solid Na2CO3 to standardize other acid solution.
A dilute HCl solution were prepared to be standardize with primary standard solution in order
to determine its concentration accurately. The reaction between HCl and Na 2CO3 as follow
The burette will be filled with dilute HCl solution prepared and 25.0ml of Na 2CO3 will be
pipette into conical flask and 2 to 3 drops of methyl orange indicator. The titration will be repeated up
to 3 times.
Sometimes there will be errors occurs during conducting this experiment where its from our
human default for example not recognizing the appearance of the red colour instantly as its appear,
not shaking the flask properly while HCl were added. These errors could be solved by doing repetition
up to 3 times to achieve the average for more precise result.
